Yesterday, I met a United States Marine Corps member here on mylot. I told him I appreciate what the marines are doing for America. The marines make many sacrifices for Americans. They put in several hard work and sacrifice to protect America and Americans both home and abroad. I wish we had something like that in my country, Nigeria. Does your country have anything similar to the marines? Do you know any marine corps member?

How did you feel having two marines in the family?

@BelleStarr Your family has military tradition. You should be proud of that.

My neighbor across the street is a Marine. My next-door neighbor is Air Force. And I'm one of three Navy members. I'm sure we have an Army veteran somewhere on this block. We have quite a few veterans of the US military service here on myLot. Lots of fellow female vets, too, which is good to see.

I can see you seem to be surrounded by the military. How did life in the Navy shape your way of living and world view?

@mydanods -- an interesting question. I will say that when I joined, I was 19 and needed a job. Now, I see it as much more. As for what it taught me, I quickly learned how to travel light and fast (in boot camp, all you had was a change of uniform and a few pairs of underwear). I can pull into a truck stop and sack out, because you learn to sleep just about anywhere. My brother's career was much worse: he was on aircraft carriers, so he had to learn to sleep with jets taking off over his head.

So there are Canadian marines? This is my first time to hear that. Canada is not active militarily internationally though.

@Freelanzer Which wars? I have always known Canada as an economic powerhouse that shies away from conflict. It usually leaves the military matters to the USA.

@mydanods Yes they are but more so in peace keeping roles now. They were active in previous wars

That's so nice. I know two marines. My uncle was a lieutenant colonel in the US Air Force.

That was so kind of you to tell them about your appreciation. I have had family in the Army and Navy, but never the Marines. Well, technically I have a 3rd cousin who is a Marine, but we have never met.

The Philippine Marines is patterned after the U.S. Marines and do interoperability exercises together from time to time. I had spoken with some U.S. Marines a long time ago when they still have bases in our country. Philippine Marines played a major role just a few months ago in routing and defeating an ISIS inspired terrorist group that occupied one of our Southern cities

So the Philippines has a marine force? That's interesting. You should because you are surrounded by water.

Yes we have the Royal Marines here in the UK. Having watched a documentary on the training they go through I have the utmost respect for anyone who enlists.
