My girlfriend and I often play a game we call Music War, during which we, with wildly different tastes in music, play songs for each other until one of us wins. This is usually achieved by playing something totally unexpected. Her sample: "Yellow Submarine" by The Beatles, "Blue Bayou" by Linda Ronstadt, "Green Green Grass of Home" by Tom Jones, "Blue Velvet" by Bobby Vinton, "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" by Tony Orlando and Dawn. My sample: "Red Sector A" by Rush, "Blue Floyd" by Tatanka, "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" by Frank Zappa, "White Coats" by New Model Army, "Red Berry Joy Town" by The Wonder Stuff. She went with a strategy of playing songs with a color in the title. In a total jackass move, so did I. Here's the funny part: she played "Deep Purple" by Donny and Marie Osmond. She could have won with that, only I had already pulled it up to play for my next turn. We were at an impass. I tried "Silver Machine" by Hawkwind, only she didn't know it, so it was not a surprise. She even tried "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby, to no avail. My choice of "A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation" by Marty Robbins didn't cut it. And then she pulled out the winner: "Purple Rain" by Prince. It was totally unexpected. Why? Because she can't stand Prince. It was the last thing I expected. Yep, I lost another one.
