March for Our Lives - March 14

Two of our seven grandchildren are teenagers and attend a wonderful high school where I worked for a decade. One is a freshman and one is a senior. They are both very interested in what is happening politically and socially in our country. Sometimes referred to as post-millennials, today's teenage generation is more politically active than the average member of their parent's generation. They are concerned about climate change, the high cost of college, too many guns on the streets and school shootings, among other issues. Tomorrow, across America, hundreds of thousands of teenagers are expected to walk out of classes in support of the students who were shot in Parkland, Florida. The high school which my grandchildren attend is in FULL SUPPORT of the March for our Lives and considers it an excellent opportunity to teach a lesson in civics to their students. The high school has changed its schedule for the day, in order to give the students the opportunity to March. They have implemented reasonable rules ... no outsiders can come onto campus for the March, and no students can leave the campus during the March. The March will be followed by time in their homerooms to give the students and their teachers and opportunity to talk about the experience. I'm so proud of my civic-minded grandkids and the school they attend!

What a great thing that the young are taking a stand against the violence. Maybe they'll succeed in changing government policy where the adults haven't.

@JudyEv - Based on the teenagers I currently know, I have more confidence in them than many of the adults in our country right now!

@JudyEv - I agree. I think the post-millennials are going to continue to be outspoken activists for the rest of their lives. They are not going to sit back and be taken advantage of.

@just4him - I agree. This is a fabulous teaching moment and I'm glad the schools and the kids are taking advantage of it. There is so much they can learn about our constitution, freedom of speech, their rights and how to protest is a respectful, patriotic way.

Sounds like both the students and the school are acting responsibly. You must be very proud of your grandchildren for what they are doing.

@LindaCPearson - Yes, I'm always proud to see teenagers speak up and learn they have a voice in America ... even when those teenagers are not connected to me. I'm so happy my grandchildren have shown an interest in this!

Well done to your grandkids and well done to the school for allowing them to do it. Kids today are definitely more politically aware than previous generations! Hopefully their generation will be the one to make the changes this world badly needs!
