And I Broke My Ankle

United States

Yesterday afternoon I was taking the trash out when I slipped on the stairs. There was a puddle on a step partway down that I didn't notice, and before I knew what was happening I was going down with my leg bent underneath me. Thank the stars my sister was over, she called for an ambulance and rode with me to the ER. A few hours and several x-rays later determined that my deformed, swollen ankle was indeed broken, with two fractures. They wrapped me up in a splint and sent me home with crutches, a prescription for pain meds, and a referral to an orthopedic specialist to get a cast. I will call him once his office is open in the morning. These turn of events, of course, mean that I'll have to reschedule the surgery I'm supposed to have in three weeks. There's no way in hell I'm going to attempt to hobble around on crutches after I've been cut open. For now I've got to get used to maneuvering these darn things, and get used to hopping around one legged. Oh, and try to keep a certain black fuzzbutt off of me. Mr. Lister is NOT happy about being denied my legs to lay on, that's for sure. I'm not happy about it either.

Seriously?! Just went there was light at the end of the tunnel for the surgery. I'm so sorry and hope you heal fast. Having just had the surgery cant blame you for not doing it now, I cant imagine trying to get anywhere on crutches with a belly incision. I know the first couple days home Frosting would jump on my stomach ohhhh thought I was gonna die!

@Srbageldog I feel so bad that this happened to you. You have been working toward the surgery for (I think we had basically the same thing kinda) the women thing and I get it first. I wasn't even working toward it like you, kinda just came at me like a freight train. No choice. I am glad it is done now thou, now hoping you heal fast and can move forward to doing the other one. So much for you to take and go thru. .

@Ithink I'm glad you got yours taken care of. I just hope I don't end up requiring emergency surgery. I'm constantly afraid my tubes are going to rupture! I never even thought of it until an ER doctor put that thought in my head. I can't wait until I can put all these broken bones and surgeries behind me!

I missed your posts about you having surgery (probably because you posted about it right after I broke my ankle!) I'm so relieved that you finally got it taken care of. Oh no, bad Frosting! Lister did that the last time I had surgery and now I'm afraid he'll jump on my leg. I guess there's a possibility that I might need surgery to fix my ankle! Sigh. I guess I'll get the other issue taken care of eventually. So weird how fast things can change. One moment I'm mentally preparing myself for surgery in a few weeks and making arrangements for it, the next I have a broken ankle and can't even walk from one room the next.

How awful that is for you, not to mention you cat. My daughter broke just a bone in her foot and is on crutches and a boot.

I'm hoping that I will get a boot, since I hear they are easier to get around with. I'm sorry your daughter broke a bone in her foot. I never thought about how debilitating it would be to not be able to use my foot. It sure makes life more challenging.

@JamesHxstatic It's good she has you to help out. I am grateful my partner, my sister, and my mom have been helping me. My sister and/or mom come over when my partner is at work. I don't know how I could have managed this last week without them. Hopefully it will get easier.

@Srbageldog Truly it does. Taking her dog out is a big problem for her. I will be there later today and until Wednesday to help out.

Be careful with that ice! It would suck big time if your surgery had to be postponed. I suppose I'll be down for the better part of the year once I recover from this and finally have my surgery.

Thank you. The doctor who treated me at the ER called me this evening to make sure I have adequate follow up care. I see a specialist on Monday morning. He said that it's very possible I might need surgery to fix it.
