Would you hire someone who acts like a racist in public

I have a local carpenter in our neighborhood. His work is very good. He does things as you ask him to. Recently, I had to hire him to do a job for me because he was recommended. I have options of other carpenters though but I choose him. Recently, on my way from the market I saw him having an angry argument with an Igbo woman. I am also Igbo but the carpenter is Yoruba. He was using all sorts of unprintable words for her. Included in these are racist words people use against igbos. I found this unpalatable and told one of our neighbors not to hire him again. He said he'll hire him that it must have been a fit of anger. I tried to convince him but the man stood his ground. Maybe it was just fits of anger that caused it. But would you hire someone who went on a racist comment in public?

No way... but If he really behaved like a racist because of anger, probably he would be better than someone who used to be!!

Maybe he would be better. What if he's the only option you have. Would you still go for him?

@mydanods surely I advice him to control his attitude.I give him a chance. Then if he doesn't change,I will never ever hire him.

@arthurchappell I understand your position. I think I would do the same as you if he or she was under my employment.

Maybe you could have a talk with him about it first. Some are suggesting so. What do you say about it?

I would not hire him. But each person can do what they want. Still, I would tell other people what I saw.

Thanks for supporting me. I believe the morals of those I hire are important. I would hire him only grudgingly - if I had no other choice.

@mydanods I agree. But as I said, some people might not care about that.

If he was good at his job I would let him finish the job but probably not hire him in future. He doesn't sound a very nice person.

@mydanods I know someone who lives by me who is the same. I find him embarrassing and keep out of his way.

No racist is ever a nice person. I wouldn't want such a person around me. There is enough hatred in the world already.

@sprite1950 Please, do keep out of his way. They are irrational creatures and live only for their desires of dominating others.

Honestly as long as people continue to let racial slurs impair their lives there will be racial slurs. It's time we stop telling or worrying about what other people think. It's their life and experience that has led them to those words. If ignored and shown differently perhaps this man will rethink his words and lighten up in the future. As long as he did a good job and created no problems for me and did not behave that way while on the job I wouldn't care. With the exception of violence against the defenseless we need to let others handle their own issues.

Well said. But if he did it to someone else, he could do it to you.

@Namelesss Would you condone anyone doing something bad in life? I wouldn't not condone it although I know we all make mistakes. For one, I don't accept people who appear to be evidently racist.

@mydanods If I trusted ONLY the people who I know have never done anything remotely bad in their lives I would have no one to trust.

Honestly, if the man was good at his job and I needed his skill, I personally do not care what he does outside of work. Just my thoughts on it.

But the things he said he could have said them to me. They were against people of my tribe.

I wouldn't hire him but I guess for some it would be hard not to if he were the best carpenter around.

Honestly, I hate racists. If I know the person I am hiring is a racist, I won't hire him, even if he does his job best.
