At what age should parents stop bringing their kids to the restroom with them?

There have been many times when I am waiting in line to use the restroom and I see women go in there with their sons. And mind you their sons are not infants or little toddlers. They are old enough to go to the bathroom on their own. I guess the mothers don't feel comfortable about sending their sons to the bathroom on their own yet. Still, I don't think that's a good idea. There should be an age limit at which boys shouldn't be allowed in the women's restroom anymore. And the same should hold true for dad's bringing their daughters to the restroom with them. After a certain age it should't be done anymore. But what should that age be?

Five has always been my max, unless at a big place like a fair or something. Ill stand outside stores and resturant bathrooms waiting while my nephews go, to make sure i see every face that goes in and out. Just incase.

That seems like a good age.

Can't say it bothers me if a mother brings a boy into the ladies as its all cubicles anyway. When my partners daughters were young he used to just take them in to the disabled toilet which is usually separate!

I don't think there is an age when it comes to safety of our children. Maybe we should design bathrooms differently so that parents can be close by without embarrassing anyone.

I guess that if parents have a child with a special problem, they should both go out with the child to public places.

@lovebuglena If he/she is old enough but terrified of going alone to public places then the mother could go with the girl or the father with the boy.

I think 5 or 6 is a good age. Unless the kid faces really bad anxiety or has trouble. But normally 5 or 6 they are going to school and already learning how to go by themselves. When a kid gets to around 7, they should know how things work and if they know how things work they are also getting a little too curious. It all depends. But I would never leave the restroom outside of it if they have to go because I want to make sure they are okay.

The mother may not have felt comfortable leaving the child on his own while she used the washroom.

That could have been the reason. But I see that happen a lot, where the mother takes her son to the bathroom with her. They can't all be uncomfortable leaving their child alone while they use the restroom.

@Starmaiden At what age do you say, "That's it. I can't take him/her to the bathroom with me anymore."? And I am referring to a mother taking a son into her restroom, a father taking a daughter into his restroom.

@lovebuglena kidnappings can happen in the blink of an eye. I guess it depends on the age of the child. :-)

I think 3 or 4 is enough age for that. but the problem maybe are the parents, they didn't teach their kids.

Maybe at 3 or 4 it is still okay to do. But it probably depends on the child.

@lovebuglena and also to parents. but at the end. parents still the responsible for that and will suffer a lot. I'm sure they don't like that either going to the bathroom with their kids.
