Are Used Or Refurbished Goods Worth Buying?

What do you think of buying used or refurbished goods? I actually had a bad experience recently. I recently brought a used set top box(cable box) from my cable operator as our monthly budget was low. He had given me three months of guarantee on it, so if anything happened within 3 months it was his lookout. But recently the box gave up on start and to my shock its just had passed 3 months of its guarantee. The box is completely dead and will have to buy a new one, I realized one thing that a new box was just few dollars more then the old one I wish could have waited and brought a new one instead of the old one would not have been in a situation like this

I think it depends on what you are getting, electronics I normally go for new if I can afford it.

@nitirrbb7 Yep sometimes you don't know how long it will last and work. Always a chance of getting a lemon.

Yeah buying a new is always better, but at times you really get a good deal for resale. But that is also to made sure because sometimes we just go for the outer perfection and later land up being fooled.

That's a great shame that it is now out of warranty. We often buy used goods but it depends what it is.

Yeah Judy it actually was my foolishness to be in a hurry to buy it, I could have waited for a month or so and arranged for a new one

Buying used and refurbished clothing and cookware and that sort of thing has saved me a lot of money over the years. However, once an electrical item that I bought used in an online auction arrived with the power cord cut right through. Fortunately I was able to return it for a refund, but did have to pay the postage. I always look for items reduced because the box is dented or the manual missing. It is like a game with me.

Yeah it actually is sort of a game if you are lucky you could grab something that is as good as new at really low price. Wasn't it mentioned in the description that the power cord to the electrical item is cut while purchasing it online? and if it wasn't then you shouldn't have even been charged for the postage.

Actually many don't know the difference between used and refurbished used are risky things and refurbished are almost like buying new one and the best thing is they come with warranty from the manufacturer. Did you get a warranty for the manufacturer?

I know Ive bought refurbished things but I am still kind of wary of what exactly "refurbished" means.

For example, You must be knowing that iPhone straight away replaces their products with a new one in warranty period instead of repairing them. Now what they do with the iPhone's that are returned back in the warranty period because of some faults is they replace the damaged part and again bring it to sale with warranty but they tag it as refurbished. Refurbished goods are returned products to the manufacturer which are repaired and again brought for sale by the manufacturer with warranty.

I tend to stay away from electrical goods unless I know where they have come from. They could be dangerous and start a fire. However, I love used furniture and even used clothes. I've picked up some real bargains over the years although now I can afford to buy new. When my children were little I wasn't as well off as I am now so we had a lot of second hand stuff.

You are right on avoiding electrical goods we never know they could be dangerous. Furniture and clothes could be good if got for a better deal. I really respect women because they adjust accordingly to their financial conditions and never brother their men for better. Respect for you too

I won't buy used electronics because it is too risky. But I usually buy used clothes, bags and sometimes jewelry. I have to look them very carefully before buying, but I have only good experiences.

Nice of you to do so, buying electronic resale goods is really not worth they are sometimes on the edge to give up. Clothes, bags and jewelry are things you can judge easily if they will make out for how long so its worth buying them.

This depends but in my case, I stopped buying used items. And I do not like selling it as well. I would rather donate the goods than gain something from them.
