That Sound You Heard Was the Internet Crashing...

....And the shredding of 99.999999% of the brackets in America. Finally, the men’s NCAA tournament has caught up to the women’s NCAA tournament. A #16 seed has beaten a #1 seed. Twenty years ago, #16 Hahvahd (Harvard for the rest of us) beat #1 Stanford in the NCAA women’s tournament. (Those records are usually considered “sub-par,” y’know: despite the fact that Pat Summitt had nearly 1,100 victories as the coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski is “considered” the “only coach with over a thousand victories.”). To celebrate, we now have a David slaying Goliath in the men’s tournament. And it crashed the internet. The University of Maryland - Baltimore County, or UMBC, slated as a #16 seed and considered the “sacrificial lamb” for the #1 seed, #1 overall seed, and #1 team in the country, Virginia, not only beat Virginia, they handily beat them. By twenty points. So everyone was online, trying to find out what the heck “UMBC” stands for, where it’s located, and to see why Tony Bennett left his heart in Charlottesville, Virginia. (For those of you who don’t know, Virginia’s head basketball coach’s name is Tony Bennett. No kidding. And no relation.) UMBC’s web site crashed. Twitter was overloaded. And Virginia fans were dumbfounded. There’s a saying in football: “On any given Sunday, any team can beat any other team.” (This doesn’t take into consideration teams like the Cleveland Browns. ) And, although it had never happened before, on any given night, any #16 seed can beat any #1 seed. I’ve seen the Cubs win a World Series, now I’ve seen a 16 seed win an NCAA tournament game. Will sports wonders never cease. The NCAA recap of history being made:
HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE! UMBC knocks off Virginia 74-54! Watch highlights, game recaps, and much more from the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament...

I’m not all that interested (haven’t watched a game yet), but I appreciate the history. Especially against Virginia....I got sick of them and “Ralph Sampson this” and “Ralph Sampson that” when I lived in Norfolk in the early 80s.
