Librarians in the bigger cities have a lot more to do than sort through books at their libraries. Many of them are trained in administering a medicine that is available to help people who overdose on drugs like heroin. In those cities, many homeless people and other drug addicts, hang out in libraries and many will use the bathrooms to shoot up. Lots of times those people will overdose which requires the librarians to act to help them. One librarian that was interviewed for the article talked about how in her career ,so far, she had helped save around 9 people from death due to overdose of heroin during her work days. The whole drug crises in this country is tragic. Thank goodness. these librarians are trained in helping these people.

Reader's Digest is still around? I used to read that magazine all the time in my younger days! We have a problem with the homeless in our libraries here in my city. But mostly it's intoxication.

That is some story. Boy, you have to almost be a paramedic these days to work at a library. How times have changed. Reminds me of the first Ghostbusters movie where the librarian got scared of a ghost which is nothing compared to a crazed addict.

it is very sad and quite terrible and no one seems to be able to find a solution. we need more good therapists that care for our survival here

Really appreciating of the librarian to help all those people with their lives on the line, I wish they realized that almost lost their life because of those actions.

I am hoping those she saved realized how lucky they were and thanked her for saving their lives and then got help to overcome their addictions.

Sounds like a very bad area some of the librarians are in. Yes I do know the homeless use the libraries to hang out.

The library here is located next to the HS and MS..a girl OD'd in the library bathroom while I was there. The librarian helped out until the paramedics got there. She was OK eventually. I could have helped too as I have had numerous CPR courses...but I didn't actually find out what was happening until later.

That sounds great that Librarian's are trained to help addicts.

Our library seems to have more audio-visual stuff than books! And if they now need to know how to treat an overdose - well, the job description has really changed.
