Learning to Swim--Day 23 (Yesterday)

Before I headed to Friday yoga last night, I had my swim lesson with Paige. And once again, it was another cold afternoon with sunshine and clear sidewalks to walk in. We didn't do any underwater swim lessons yesterday. But we did go back to the lap pool and had reserved a lane. I've warmed up with one lap each of the regular backstroke and the elementary backstroke. Then Paige wanted to work on my free style swimming and used cones for distance markers. First it was halfway at the lifeguard chair, then she moved it a few feet past it. She also had planted another cone that was toward between the first flag banners and the chair. So I swam first to the lifeguard chair and stopped for a quick breather and resume swimming the lap. At the end of the pool, she taught me how to do the front crawl with the freestyle (which is by tilting my body halfway and then fully) after a few strokes. She also wanted me to work on my breathing too. Overall, I've done 5 laps of the freestyle with the front crawl for the duration of my swim lesson. Maybe next week I'll learn how to swim underwater and maybe the butterfly before I go on a brief 1-2 week gym break. Since spring break is next week for the schools here and has two weeks off of work, when she would sub for somebody else, she asked me if I wanted to do Monday and Friday or back to Tuesday and Thursday at an earlier time. I told her I'll stick to the Tuesday and Thursday time slot at 4 PM. Next week, I'll mention to Paige about my brief break to renew my gym membership for a final year in mid-April and return to the gym to resume swim lessons.

That stinks. Maybe you need to find a new instructor and have new lessons. Thanks.

@nela13 Oh my! Maybe you should stick to the shallow end and start from there. No lifeguards to help you out?

When I was little we lived on a small property in the country, and one of the boundaries was a creek. My Dad was concerned about me possibly falling in and drowning, so he taught me to swim when I was 2. I've always been a strong swimmer, though never fast. In my early to mid 20s I used to swim a mile every day. However, as I got older other things became more important, and swimming dropped off. Until about a month ago I had not been in a pool for at least 10 years. Now I am going a couple of times a week and loving it, even though both my form and my fitness are somewhere south of zero.

Wow, Lynn. I don't think I could swim a mile everyday. Maybe 2 laps. So glad you returned to swimming and loving it. My form isn't perfect either. We'll get there.

@lynnief That's a good goal. I can manage a half-hour for my lessons.

@KristenH yes, at the moment it's mostly about keeping the body moving more or less constantly for an hour or so.

I think so. I've moved from beginners to almost advanced in the past couple of months.

Glad you are enjoying your swimming lessons. My mom and dad taught me enough to stay afloat but I never learned more than the basics. I prefer swimming in pools where I can control the situation and find the shallow end

I'm with you Rasma. I'm getting used to the lap pool and the cold water. I just wish it was 5 degrees warmer.

I doubt it, John. I'm doing this for leisure and not for competitions. I'm too old for the Olympics too.

Thanks April. I hope so. I could be pretty sure to try to do it on my own.
