Is it wise to agree to a pay cut?

We live in a neighborhood where lots of girls and even women in their middle ages do babysitting for career parents. I have a girl who confided in me recently about an issue she is considering and would want a response before month end. She does babysitting for a parent who is a doctor. The doctor works until about 6pm and she has to start babysitting from 8am to 6pm. She earns about 7,000 naira per week i.e 1,000 naira every day for three hours of babysitting. That makes it roughly 30,000 naira per month (approximately $100 dollars per month). The minimum wage here is 19,000 naira per month (about $50). So she is earning very well by her standards seeing that she only finished high school. She works hard at her job and also loves the twins. But recently, the doctor told her she wants to start a pay cut. Instead of 1,000 naira per day, she will be giving her 800 naira per day. One of the reasons she cited is that the girl eats in her home and she gives her transport fare to and from her home. The girl is distraught. This is a good paying job to her. She doesn’t know if to accept the pay cut or not. She is afraid if she accepts the pay cut, it might lead to further pay cut. What would you advise her? I have to give her a reply soon.

Maybe she Can accept If It is a short cut, instead of 800 per day It could be 900? If the twins like her It will be on her side.

So she could use the children as her bargaining chip?

@mydanods how old are the twins? If they like her it means that she is a good babysitter and deserve being well paid.

Nope. I wouldn’t accept the pay cut. I’d bring my lunch and get my own way there and back

But it might amount to the same thing at month end as it would taking the pay cut. That's what I think although I have not asked her.

She better start scouting for a better client, if that goes further, the only benefit that she probably get is the transport.

I would agree to the pay cut for now, but begin actively looking for a better position.

Sounds reasonable. That way she doesn't lose out completely.

Can you give any reasons why not to agree?

Would she be better off taking her own lunch paying her own fares? Maybe she should take this pay cut but if the woman suggests a further one, she might need to look for something else. I hope a suitable arrangement can be made.
