Bees, Wasps and creepy crawlies

I must admit I am afraid of anything that has a sting and in particular wasps. I know that bees are important to the environment and I wouldn't kill one but if a wasp bothers me I will get in a panic. I was stung when I was little but I'm not allergic so apart from a little soreness it was no major event. I'm not afraid of spiders or ants because the type we have in the UK are not particularly threatening and I often think when you compare the size of a human being to an insect it seems absurd that we should be afraid of them, but many of us are. How do you feel about insects, do they not bother you or does the mere thought of them make your skin crawl? Image from Pixabay

My dad taught entomology (among other things), and bugs still creep me out.

Do you get many poisonous insects where you are Kelli?

@spiderdust That would scare me. The only poisonous spiders we have are those that are imported accidentally with fruit and veg sometimes although I think I did read that some deadly spider is making it's home over here. It might be just scaremongering though.

@sprite1950 We do have black widow spiders, which are very poisonous, but they're very shy and aren't likely to attack unless you bother them. There's also brown recluse spiders; their necrotic venom does horrible, horrible damage to your tissues if they bite.

Im not sure if this applies to hornets and wasps but if a bee stings you, it will die shortly afterward. This is why they dont sting unless they really feel threatened...as if it's going to matter. For this reason I am not afraid of them. When a bee or hornet approaches me, I remain calm and allow it to land on me. It will sniff me out, realize I'm not what it's looking for then leave. The only bug Im remotely afraid of is the earwig. They can do some real damage. :-)

I'm glad you brought that up @Starmaiden. I did know that a bee will die if it stings but I'm not sure if everyone does. We don't get many hornets over here in the UK probably because our climate is too wet. I hate earwigs too because they pinch and they get everywhere. I found one in the bed once

@sprite1950 I was told that they get into your ears and feed on the eardrum. I dont know how true that is but I still dont like them. :-)

I am not really afraid of insects, I actually want to keep honey bees to help the environment but I don't have the land to do so and I live in the suburbs so it is not allowed.

That's a shame. They do need a lot of space though. A friend of mine had a son who kept them in the back garden but they had to be transferred somewhere else in the end as the neighbours complained. they were straying into their gardens.

@sprite1950 What creeps me out are not bugs.... Teenagers at night. I dont feel safe walking down on the street at night if I see a group of deliquent teens. Normal and Good teenagers are at home in the middle of the night.

@CaptAlbertWhisker I hear you, we have a lot of teenagers hanging around a park at night close to where I live. It's not so bad in the winter but the summer is terrible and we always have police being called out.

Snowdrop66, I do love bees, but the hornets and others I don't appreciate them as much.
