Overplayed Classic Rock Songs I'm Not Sick of (Yet): Lola (#6)

Monday morning to you all! Poor Monday, it's so hated. The only good Monday is the one where you don't have to get up and go to work. I did, so I'll make the best of it. Hopefully Monday will do the same. At least we can listen to some good music. Here's a song that's played every day on classic FM rock stations but I'm not sick of it. #6: Lola - Kinks You can add pretty much any "overplayed" Kinks song to this. I'm thrilled that I got to see this band live. Here we have CONTROVERSY!!! (Calm down, Prince fans, not that "Controversy." ) This song was banned in a number of places, and for a number of different reasons. Our friends "down under" didn't like the subject matter (this was 1970, remember) of a man having a date with a cross-dresser. On the other hand, the BBC didn't like the mention of "Coca Cola" in the song. The latter issue was much more easily resolved: they issued the single with "cherry cola" in Coke's place, and the BBC played it. The story is that the Kinks' manager went out (and home) with a woman that turned out to be a guy. As the Brits have a little more humor about themselves than we do in the States, it spawned a lighthearted song ("I'm a man, I'm a man, and so is Lola") about the incident. It's a Kinks Klassic. It's overplayed, but it's a great song. Lola Written by Ray Davies Recorded by the Kinks From Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One, 1970 Girls will be boys and boys will be girls:

@JohnRoberts -- sunny afternoons can lead to Waterloo sunsets! (You set me up for that one, didn't you?)

I second that classic song! The song was a predecessor for later tunes by Bowie and Lou Reed that dealt with homosexuality and transgenders, ie, "Walk On The Wild Side."

Richard Thompson did a song called "Woman or a Man?" which is more or less a re-telling of this song.

Then there is the Scorpions' "He's a Woman, She's a Man."

Yes! How can you get tired of "Lola?" I heard it in a store the other day. I was like, "Yes!"
