Sunday Afternoon Music War

Yesterday, I was challenged to a Sunday afternoon music war. It's a game my girlfriend and I play sometimes, where we, with wildly different musical tastes, play songs for each other until one of us "wins," usually by playing something surprising. Her sample: "Theme from Cheers" by Gary Portnoy, "Theme from Happy Days" by Pratt & McClain, "Theme from Miami Vice" by Jan Hammer, "Love and Marriage" by Frank Sinatra, "Theme from Laverne and Shirley" by Cyndi Grecco. My sample: "Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat, "Chains of Love" by Erasure, "Drive that Fast" by Kitchens of Distinction, "Rage Hard" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, "The Hellion/Electric Eye" by Judas Priest. As you can see, her strategy was to bombard me with TV theme songs to set up a surprise, while I went with bands with gay vocalists. I got a quick win this time, and I rarely win. I played "Young Guns (Go for It!)" by Wham. The surprise wasn't that I played Wham, or that George Michael was gay (common knowledge.) Rather, it was surprising that George Michael raps the lyrics, something he shied away from after that first album. If you had never heard it, you would only know Michael as a singer. She had never heard it, so it was shocking. I'll take it. I've now won two in a row!

Yes, but nothing I play usually comes as no surprise to her.

It was their first album. They didn't get popular until their second.

Two in a row! Is that a record? You realize you've won more than the Cleveland Browns!
