When there is no gas in the barbecue....

Last night we picked up Vince’s brother and his wife and drove the short distance to a bus terminal where they caught a bus to Perth airport. At 6am this morning they caught a plane to Egypt and 24 hours after their departure from Western Australia they’ll reach their destination in Luxor.
There, there will be an ecstatic meeting with their daughter, her husband and their four children. We’ve met the children often and one of our fondest memories is of the time we had a barbecue at Ironstone Gully Falls not far from us. There is a gas barbecue there but it was out of gas.
So we gathered up some wood ….. but no-one had a match. Luckily we’d bought a newspaper as we came through town so we rolled up some of the real estate pages and lit the end with a cigarette lighter from the car. Vince then did an Olympic torch type run to where the wood was and we soon had a fire.
But – what to use for a hotplate? We found an old roadsign that had been discarded so sat that on the flames paint-side down. Once hot, we cleaned it with oil and newspaper and soon we were cooking our sausages. When we manage to all get together this is one of the topics that always comes up.

You must have had that top of the world feeling when you actually tasted those sausages. Takes me back to so many of our own adventures.

@JudyEv I remember when as kids we would use our pocket money to cook outside. The kids from the neighbourhood would come too. We would use fire wood and not knowing how to avoid smoke in the food whatever we cooked was smoke ridden but tasted good. After all it was our effort

Sometimes, when you're away from home, you have to improvise to make things work. At least you were all smart enough to figure out solutions, instead of just throwing your hands up in the air and giving up! Ingenuity at its best!

@JudyEv See what great things can happen when you put your mind to it? That's how we should tackle all our problems in life...with a determination that we are going to accomplish what we set out to do, no matter what the circumstances!

great that you were able to improvise so well - hope I'm with you if we all end up on a desert island - your skills would keep us alive

Those types of adventures are always fun, although often in hindsight!
