Scottsdale has long been the Beverly Hills of the Phoenix area with much wealth and country clubs. This is where you find high end luxury resorts and shopping. Old Town Scottsdale has been revitalized to tourist friendly with shops and endless bars and eateries. Located in the mall end is the Scottsdale Historical Museum housed inside the 1910 little red schoolhouse. The building was saved from demolition by the city in 1969. There is not much to the museum being a one room structure that has been divided into sections. City history is related basically through old photos. The classroom is recreated and there is the original school bell. A display is devoted to Winfield Scott the noted Civil War general. He was a Scottsdale pioneer who established this school. Displayed are Scott’s Bible, glasses, chairs and small piano. Early residents lived in “tent houses” which were constructed of wood floors, partial wood walls and everything else canvas. Such an abode has been recreated. Branding irons, skillets, farm tools and an old clock hang on walls. A 1905 barber chair and pole are accompanied by a case of razors, straps and brushes. There are displays of Indian bowls and high school memorabilia. As local history museums go, Scottsdale is less than impressive being scarce in content and artifacts. It is okay to stop if you happen to be in the area and have a few minutes to spare. The price is right: free.

Maybe they should put a sign up in there: "We have no history."

I think the former bachelor Arie..is a realtor in Scottsdale. I didn't know it was a super wealthy town. I was in Phoenix once, lots of suburban sprawl. I heard the eco system is actually changing with all the greenery, lawns and palms people plant.

Well, at least it gives you someplace to go if you have to wait around for something. How do they make any money if they don't charge?

I would assume city supported for the most part plus donations.

It's a shame there isn't a bit more to see. Most museums can be quite interesting if they're done right.

Cool. Our local museum has a display dedicated to General William Jackson Palmer, founder of Colorado Springs. It's got his Civil War uniform and weapons, and a Letter of Commendation handwritten by Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln had very poor penmanship! Of course, it just occurred to me that you have been here and might have seen it.

@JohnRoberts - Yeah, it's downtown. I go every once in awhile, as they always have a rotating exhibit. My favorite one was on, I forget her name, one of Colorado Springs' first black female entrepreneurs. She owned a downtown jazz club, and all the big names came through. A young Flip Wilson was stationed at Fort Carson, and she would let him come in and open for the headliner so that he could hone his stand up act.

Seeing I have an insatiable interest in the way people lived in days gone by, I would find this museum very interesting.
