I was reviewing 'the root of the word "Works,"' and I remembered that sometimes people say "The Works" when they're ordering food or -otherwise describing something that is 'totally outfitted or -dressed or -loaded (with toppings, options, tools, etc.) http://worldwidewisewordweb.blogspot.com/2018/03/work-worker-works-worked-workers.html But I don't know where that comes from. And when I Binged "phrase, the works" (and other similar word-sequences), the closest thing I found was an "Urban Dictionary"-page that described those real meanings (and a couple 'Not Safe For Work'-meanings ). Do you know how 'The Works' came to be "a toppings-selection"?

It helped a little, but not much about 'the history of the phrase.' Maybe "this search" will turn up something

i think it's a northeast american thing.lot easier than listing off everything. it's basically the same as the similar expression "they put me through the works"..just more or less means they didn't miss nothing.most likely depression era.
