What is it about cats and heights?

I know that cats love to climb trees and jump up onto things like window sills, but why? What is it about height that attracts cats?
Since acquiring my cat a few weeks ago I've had to scoot her off of my kitchen counters. When she is being too quiet I go see where she is and 9 times out of 10 she'd be on the counter. This evening I soaked the counter with water. Again she was being too quiet so I went to see what kind of trouble she got herself into. Where did I find her? On top of the fridge! :-D
What is it about heights that cats enjoy so much?

Cats are defensive animals. They feel safer when they are taller than others. They know their weaknesses and they feel they're safe when they are in high places. That's why if you own a cat you must get your cat a cat condo or a place where they can call their own where they can feel safe, preferably a divider attached on the upper part of your wall.
I learned that from watching Jackson Galaxy on youtube from the moment I got my cat.

@Starmaiden Try watching Jackson Galaxy's video on youtube to help you more with your cat. He's known as the cat whisperer.
Whenever I have a new pet and breed, I always try to learn as much as I can about them as I don't want them unhappy in my home. I want to give them the best home and comfort they can be in and not deprive them of anything.

because they are not afraid of heights and can easily jump down from it. do you enjoy heights too?

@Starmaiden oh yeah.. and sometimes it is also mind spreading experience because it is a bit scary.

I enjoy viewing from on high. It can be a mind expanding experience. :-)
