I'm in a Cast Now

Yesterday I had my appointment with the orthopedist. He was very nice and explained my break to me, and told me in his professional opinion surgery isn't needed, but offered to refer me to a surgeon for a consultation if I wanted one. I passed on the offer. I trust that six weeks in a cast will have me healed properly. I got my cast, but my foot was still very swollen so he cut one side to allow room for swelling, then wrapped the cast with some ace bandage. I go back next week to have this cast cut off and another one put on, which won't have the cut in it. I dread going to the appointment already simply because I don't want to tackle the stairs to my apartment again. Scooting myself down was easy, all things considering. But getting back up? That was traumatic. I wouldn't have been able to do it if my boyfriend hadn't been there to help lift me up on each step. I know that was not easy for him to do. I'm not a dainty girl. On top of all that, I somehow managed to sprain or jam the thumb on my left hand. This happened while I was trying to maneuver myself into the car after my appointment. I flopped down on my thumb and heard it crack. I don't think it's broken, as I can still move it, but it is pretty swollen and sore. Of course I would do that! I suppose I take being a klutz to a whole new level. So here I lay in bed, with a broken ankle and injured thumb, for the next six weeks. At least Lister can lay on my legs now that I have a cast on it. And he's determined to make up for all the lost time! I have lot's of books to read to keep me occupied, and I am hoping to get some work done on my own novels while I am bed bound. My boyfriend, sister, and parents have been spoiling me! I guess that's the bright side of breaking my ankle. I miss being able to do things for myself, though. I hope all of you are doing well. I'll try to catch up with everyone over the next day.

Wow lady, first the foot (glad surgery isn't needed) and now the thumb? Reading is a good way to pass the time and hope you get some of your own writing done. Relax and enjoy the down time. yes I can tell you that but know how you feel too. I hate sitting round a lot.

@Ithink Yes! My butt hurts too. I just want to be able to get up and walk around, but when I hobble around on my crutches, my lower back hurts worse! I hope everything on you heals fast too. I go back to the orthopedist on Tuesday to have this cast cut off and a different one put on (this one has a cut down the side because I had a lot of swelling.) He said I was looking at about 6 weeks in the cast, then possibly 2 weeks of physical therapy.

Thankfully my thumb is feeling better (I can actually use it again, although it's still sore and slightly swollen,) so I'm guessing I must have just sprained or jammed it. I am not a graceful person and I'm so paranoid that I'm going to tumble and hurt myself worse while on the crutches! My back has been hurting from sitting around so much. I've been getting up a bit more on my crutches, but like I said, I'm afraid I'm going to wind up hurting myself on those! So I try to just stay in bed with my leg elevated.

@LadyDuck My legs already ache when it rains. I suppose my ankle will probably always bother me from now on when we have rainy weather.

when i wrenched my foot/ankle years ago,i had 3 hairline fractures-but they didn't give me a cast.which i thought was kind of odd, because i got about as close as you can get without breaking it.. i improvised tho with 2 socks and a mess of duct tape.felt better, then i could stand somewhat.

That is odd. I'll never understand some doctors. I mean, if it's fractured, even a hairline fracture, you'd think they'd put it in a cast! Or at least a splint.

Yes, it is very painful! I keep moving the foot to avoid getting blood clots, as that's a small risk.

@yugocean My sister comes every day while my boyfriend is at work to help me. We've been spending a lot of time together.

You need a blessing. A house cleansing too. Just to get rid of all that bad mojo around you. When I could not walk up my stairs. I found coming up easier than going down. I called it butt walking

I thought going up would be easier too, but the stairs at my apartment are steep and have a lot of space between each step. Everyone who visits me hates those stairs. (It's an older building, probably built in the 60s or 70s.) I should have my mom burn some sage for me next time she's over.
