March 21st is recognizied as Single Parents Day on the National Celebration Calendar. There are approximately 320 million single parents Worldwide.
In the past centuries death of a parent was the most common cause of single family parenting. Today, with the advancements in medicine and sanitation that is no longer the case. Most single family parents are due to divorce, accidental pregnancies and single parenting by choice.
President Ronald Reagan, in 1984, signed a proclamation declaring March 21st as National Single Parent Day.
Thanks to the petitioning efforts of Janice Moglen, who collaborated with Parents Without Partners, the United States now recognizes the hard work of single parents on this day. In the proclamation it states in part, " we should recognize the contributions single parents are making, sometimes under great hardships, to the lives of their children, and I ask that people volunteer their help, privately or through community organizations, to single parents who seek it to meet their aspirations for their children."
Raising children can be challenging with two parents. Kudos to the parents doing the work of two!

It is nice to recognize the efforts and difficulty of being a single parent and honoring their commitment in raising their child without a spouse's support...

Yes, I agree. I have seen what some of my friends have gone through. It really can be a difficult adjustment for everyone.

Being a divorced, single parent was not my choice. But, it was the hand that I was dealt and the kids and I did just fine, as a little family. We did everything together and loved each other, unconditionally. It was a lot of hard work, putting a Christmas together, for two children:( We were financially strapped, to say the least.

@dgobucks226 Actually, it was like going back to school, I learned how to manage as time passed by. We did just fine, as a single parent family!

I think the idea of the day is to recognize the hard work a single parent does in the absence of a spouse in raising their child. Yes, happy is relative for sure...

@dgobucks226 What I can say from experience is, when you raise a child, and they want to blame you for everything when they are grown, it is doubly as hurtful, because you are taking the blame and resentment for two parents lol

I never experienced being raised by a single parent or a single parent myself, but I salute single parents! Thank you for this information.

Never knew such day exist but it's great to honour single parents. It's never easy to raise a child alone with no support from other people.

I know a few single parents and it can be very trying for them at times. Nice to have a day to celebrate their sacrifices and their efforts in raising their children alone.

Raising children alone (or with a partner that does nothing to help) has to be difficult!

Child rearing requires a lot of effort, and two involved parents make it much easier.

Yes "C," I like the idea of honoring a single parent's efforts in trying to raise a child alone. Taking on multiple tasks is a real struggle.
