Making the most of a trip to the city

We both needed to go to Bunbury in Western Australia today to sign documents at the bank. We are closing two accounts that we have there. When we need to go to this city we try to make the most of our trip. So we went to a place which sells building supplies and made enquiries about the materials we’ll need to renovate the bathroom in our caravan. We then spent over an hour and a half at the bank which was annoying but at least it is finished with now. We then checked out two thrift stores. At one we bought a heap of children’s clothing all at 50% off. This particular shop has the price tickets in different colours. Each week clothes with a particular colour ticket are 50% off. Today we chose clothes with purple tickets and saved ourselves $25. At the other thrift shop all summer stock for small children was heavily discounted so we bought some more clothes. These will all go to Nepal in October and will be given away to needy children. Our last stop was at the hardware store to buy new camping chairs and some globes. We also checked out gas struts which we’ll use on the doors of the new cabinets we’re making. So we made the most of our trip but it’s good to be home again. The photos show the cabinets we built into the bus we converted. You can also see the gas struts which hold the bed-frame up and allows us easy access to the storage space underneath. There is an air-conditioner in the centre top between the cupboards.

@judyev That picture reminds me of may father fitting out a van with beds etc to take us on a three month camping trip from Malawi down through Mozambique, Rhodesia (long time ago) and S. Africa. In Durban we made the slight side trip on a boat to Australia and back.

That must have been a magical trip. How many of the family went? I know you have at least two brothers so if everyone went on the trip it must have been a bit of a squash.

@xFiacre Vince went across the Nullarbor as a young teenager with a family. There were the parents and three girls - all in a station wagon. It was what one did in those days wasn't it?

I think that you made great use of the time. I'm sure that the families will be very grateful when they receive the clothing items.

@epiffanie Thanks. It isn't really difficult for us to collect the clothes and I know they and the wells make a huge difference to the poorer people.

Vince is going to Nepal in October and he will take the clothes with him. He did the same two years ago. He is part of a group of people who raise money to install wells in poor areas of Nepal. The clothes is really just an extra.

It just warms my heart to know that you took time on your trip to shop for the kids of Nepal, even though I'm sure you had lots of other things on your mind! Good job Judy!

@JudyEv Vince won't have any issues bringing all those items into the country to distribute? Will there be any issues getting through Customs?

@moffittjc I hadn't thought of that. Last time I think he just walked in with the suitcase. It's only clothes - and secondhand at that.

How big is Bunbury? Can't be like Perth.

Perth has 1.9 million people and Bunbury 33,000. It meets the criteria for being called a city but really it's just a large town.

Did you not wind up at a restaurant? I hardly do off line shopping these days but in those good old days we had a place to wind up - the same place every time.

They turned out quite well. They were a bit tricky as the back of the bus isn't vertical but curves in slightly. And the ceiling curves as do the walls. There was a lot of 'think' time before we started cutting up our timber. lol

We had a bed like this in Monte-Carlo. A lot of dust accumulated in the storage area.

@JudyEv The apartments in Monte-Carlo were not big, due to the very high costs, but we regretted the idea of the storage under the bed.

I can imagine. The bus is so big that we've never really made much use of the storage underneath the bed.

It will be nice to get back into making something. Next week we'll go in and pick up the big sheet of 'stuff' we need to line the bathroom and the timber for making the cupboards.
