Poem - Countryside
I went for a walk all on my own
No one to talk to. I wanted to be alone
Walking without a set destination.
Concentrating on my footsteps and the road ahead
Is my favourite kind pf meditation
Thinking of nothing, clearing my head.
Unlike Wordsworth I don’t know daffodils
From dandelions or beech tree from sycamore.
I just keep going up and down the hills
Mile after mile until too tired to walk any more.
I’d take a short rest and then set off again
Towards home before the Sun goes down.
I don’t care that it’s starting to rain
And I just make the last bus back to town
Where I take a seat reflecting on all the fun I had
And regret not taking someone along to share my delights
Which make me start to feel a little bit sad
Knowing I should bring my friends next time to see the same sites.
After much mithering and cajoling from me
My friends finally agree to come out and see
The wonders of the open countryside
But get impatient even on the long bus ride.
As incessant rain washes away the footpath
Turning our trek into a ten mile mud bath.
The easy pace I promised turn endurance test
With my companion wanting to stop every five minutes to rest.
Watching their phones constantly text
Leaves me increasingly stressed out and vexed
That they can’t leave their tech alone for just half a day
They ignore my pleas to put their mobiles away.
I realize that I really was better off when walking alone
Strolling forever at my own pace with no one to moan
That we went past the pub, a park bench or a picnic zone.
Despite what the Bible says, man sometimes is meant to be alone.
