Stoned Cat - Moochum

Stoned Cat.. I was doing horse chores, looked around confused.. As normally my Cat, Moochum would run up to me and plant himself on my shoulders... He did not mind laying there as I throw hay bales and dragged water hoses around my shoulders was his home, and nothing was going to move him off unless it was me . So I was walking around looking for him and I find him laying in the grass next to my catnip garden... Face down his body twisted feet on his head and his paws straight out... I thought something killed him.. So gently with a stick I lifted his head up and realized he was still breathing.. and his cheeks were full of something.. and green sprigs were hanging out of his mouth... I had cats for 20 yrs and most cats maybe nibble a little of a leaf and roll around on it.. But Not Moochum... I gently rearranged him to sit more comfortable and carefully pulled three 18 inch long tightly curled up sprigs of catnip out of his mouth.... This cat looked half dead eyes glazed over stoned as can be.. So I contacted my friend who is a vet assistant and she said to just make sure no wildlife would get him he would be fine a couple hours.. So I washed him off gently with a hose that had warm water from it sitting in the yard... dried him off and plopped him on his favorite place my shoulders.... Thankfully this is the only time Moochum did this stunt... I thought a wild racoon or something got him at first.... So I would give him a little bit of catnip daily.. and that sufficed... as he happily napped on my shoulders.... But that did not stop him from eventually eating most of my garden .. lol.. Most of my cats do not like catnip, to them only good thing is it for is hiding kittens in. Some of the mothers. :) I always thought it was strange place to hide kittens. But they are covering their sent from predators... I went around and ripped up most catnip in the area I planted.. For Moochum's safety... His was a very unusual case. He was back to his normal self within hours... I usually with my cats did not let them have more than one leaf at a time i used a mortar and pedestal to grind it into a powder and put it on something for them to roll around on. I did not want any other super stoner cat incidences lol. I used to lay down next to Moochum and pry plants away from him he'd grab them back. I love catnip too but people do not get high on it like they do. it is good as a tea for anti anxiety, and chewing it can ease tooth pain... But make sure you learn proper food drug interactions etc best to consult an herbalist if you want to try to use it for medicinal uses... But my views on getting high. I believe in getting high on song and dance and activity, not on drugs or chemicals... After all you do not want to look like a dead cat in the weeds... He had turkey vultures closing in on him too. He is lucky I found him when I did or he would have been a meal for sure.

I have catnip growing wild here. As far as I know I have never had a cat overload on it. Glad that you found him when you did.

Boy did he overdo on the catnip. I am glad he didn't end up as a vultures lunch.
