Traveling a great distance

When going on a trip you always look for the most economical way possible. Years ago when I first went across country with my family it was just about $800 U.S. funds round trip for 4 of us. A year later We had to go across country fast so we drove. I did all of the driving since I am the only licensed driver.I saved at least $400 driving myself. Last year we went on a bus for 2 of us and it cost just about $400 round trip. I would rather drive myself and save about a hundred than go through that again. So many stops and layovers. At least when I drive it takes 20 hours which I prep myself for a couple days before. What is the greatest distance you have ever gone in a car?

We have gone 600 miles in a day, just this last week. I have also gone around 900 miles in a car with my first husband. Our trip this week, including only one meal eaten in a restaurant cost less than $200. Yes, it is much cheaper to take everyone and get in the car and go however I would like to go on the train at least once. Also, specific bus tours can be economical when they include lodging and shows, etc.

I did not mind the train but unless you get a sleeper , It can be terrible with lights and doors opening all night.

I map out my trip, plan my stops along the way and sleep just before I leave. I leave at night because of less traffic

My first car was a 20 years old and slow Citroen 2cv, I crossed all Europe with it and I went to Turkey where I visited Istanbul which is in Asia. It was a 2500 km trip and back for holidays, so I halted in many places to visit them. My max driving time was about 6 or 7 hours. I was young and unconscious but also lucky as the car did not had an important failure during the trip, I would never do that again.

@Metsrock69 Renting a car to do 2000 km would be quite expensive here, but it would be the best to do.

My biggest trip in a car was about 2000 kilometres and it was in a bus. I travel to Germany to spend my school holidays with my cousins there.

550 miles in one night followed by a few hours sleep in a layby then 550 miles back home! I was a delivery driver at the time and it had been a quiet week so it seemed worth it at the time! I wouldn't fancy doing the round trip in 24 hours again though!

@Metsrock69 Aargh breakdowns that's the last thing you need on a long journey! Bad enough when you're an hour from home

I travelled from North Somerset to Cornwall in the summer of 2012. We began the journey at dawn time on a Saturday to avoid busy traffic on the motorway. We stopped off at the Eden Project and found few people there. We were told holiday makers were arriving at their accommodation on a Saturday so they wouldn't visit it. We saw lots of lovely trees, flowers and planting. Later on I drove down to the accommodation. We arrived at dinner time so it had been a happy day of driving. My two children were so happy to arrive.

Use to like driving distance many years ago when there wasn't as many cars. I think it was early 80's when I took my car trip across country. The prairie took a long time. Remember there was a long 15% bend at the end of it. Woo almost didn't make it.

I'm an admitted wimp. I drive about 5 to 6 hours and am wiped out. So if I am driving I drive about 200 miles before finding a motel. One year I did go on a trip with my brother. He drove us from Minneapolis, Minnesota to almost Arkansas and he did not stop much.
