Ear piercing in children

My granddaughter is 11 and pressing me to get her ears pierced. I'm not sure if she is still too young as I am worried they will get infected. I know lots of children and babies have it done with no problems but I would like her to be a bit older. I was 15 when I had mine pierced and still had trouble with one ear. I would love to hear your opinions on what age you think it would be safe for her to have it done as many of her friends already have their ears pierced. Image from Pixabay

Back in times, in Italy, there was the habit to piece the ears of the girls before they reached 1 year of age. My mom had and all my aunts had. My ears are not pierced.

I have a friend who is married to an Italian and they had their girls done as tiny babies. I was quite annoyed as many years ago she took my daughter who was 9 at the time and had her ears pierced without my permission.

@LadyDuck Especially as she had a lot of trouble with one ear. There were lots of tears and she lost sleep because of the soreness.

I don't think age would make any difference as far as possible infection goes. As long as it is done by a doctor or in a reputable salon, there should not be any problem.

I tend to worry as a little girl I know ended up in hospital and had to have part of her ear lobe removed because she had such a bad infection.

@lynnief It's not usual but it did stick in my mind. She was 8 at the time and I worked with her mum. The back of her ear grew over the stud fastening.

It is kind of a tradition in our country to have it done on the child's first birthday.

It was quite hard to find a picture of a child with piercings but the little girl in the picture was one of the few I found on Pixabay. She's very cute

no problem whatever age it is as long as it is the earlobes and not on any other part of the body.

@sprite1950 ohhh then why does she want to have ear piercing... now this is the advantage of piercing at early age

It's not age that makes piercings go bad, it's poor care, so as long as you make sure she's going to be responsible and you also take responsibility yourself (as she's a child) then it will be fine. If you keep them clean and leave them in for the recommended amount of time so they heal properly, the only thing that could go wrong is if she's allergic to the earrings

@LilyBeBack I think I would probably end up taking care of them and she does have a sensitive skin like me. I can only wear silver.

@LilyBeBack Cleanliness could be an issue with her if her teeth brushing is anything to go by! My daughter had a lot of piercings like you but her lip one caused a problem as it started to affect her bottom teeth and her dentist told it would cause permanent damage if she continued with it so she took it out.

@sprite1950 I think an 11 year old is much more responsible than the average 15 year old However if you're not sure then maybe just wait a year and see how you feel then. I've always had problems with my left earlobe and my right one has been absolutely fine, it's really annoying because now I can't even get an earring in my left one at all Yet I've got the top of my ear pierced, and my tragus, my lip, and my septum, and I've never had a single problem with any of them. I think piercings through cartilage heal better than ones that are just through skin

I think ear piercing is not quite a good thing to do for a young child. Though I've seen Mother's carrying their daughters who look to be just over a year old with pierced ears already. The child could be allergic to alloys of metals that will go in the ear, piercing is hurting the body so it could get infected, once you pierce it there is no going back, so I believe it's best to wait till she is an adult, then if she still wants to get her ears pierced she can do it on her own.

That's how it was for me. I got my ears pierced when I was older and by then my parents were ok with it.

She's not very good with cleaning her teeth. I've told her if her teeth brushing improves I will think about it.

I had my ear pierced when I was a baby. Back then, the baby girls had their ears pierced when they were a couple of days old. No infection will arise if you have a nurse do it. It has nothing to do with age, but with clean hands and utensils such as the ones doctors use. In my country, the babies then wore small 18 K gold earrings. Now surgical steel serves the same purpose.

@sprite1950 Things have changed here too since I was born. Then, all babies were baptized before they were 1 month old. Now it is completely different.

@marguicha When is it done now? Here we sometimes let the child decide for him/herself when they want to be baptised which can be at any age.

Over here most girls at a very young age have their ears pierced with no problem at all. I have never had mine done either. If she wants to to have them done then I would let her.

Here in India, among Hindus especially, the ideal age is between 3 and 5 for ear piercing. Now some babies have their ear pierced even before they are 1 year old.Personally I think there is no need to wait till your grand daughter is 15.

I was thinking in about a year as then I will be slightly more comfortable with it. They are allowed to wear sleepers at school as these can be pulled out during play, they can only wear studs.

Ear piercing is fine at 16 (piercing anything else is asinine) @sprite1950 . Babies having their ears pierced is unconscionable. Just because her friends had it done already is no reason for her to follow suit. What's next tattoos?

All four of my granddaughters had their ears pierced before they were a year old. They had very few problems. I was 13.... My children (the girls) all had their ears pierced the same day. The oldest was 13, the youngest was 3.

@Morleyhunt Children here are not allowed to wear hoops (we call them sleepers) at school in case they get ripped out while they are playing. They have to wear studs.

My gi4rls all had their ears pierced as babies. I have a friend that had her daughters ears pierced when she was 9 years old. There was no problem. As long as you take care with the piercing I am pretty sure it will be okay.

I was a little child when I got my ears pierced. I asked it from my mom (for a long time) and she let me. I had no infection and I was (and still I am) happy to have my ears pierced.

I can't imagine that my parents would have let me have mine pierced young. They would have been horrified. It wasn't that popular when I was young.

@sprite1950 My aunt had her ears pierced and I saw that she has nice earrings. It took a long time to convince my mom. And I remember that she let me do this, she held my hands while they pierced my ears, but she didn't maintained this.

We got most of my grand daughters done when they were babies because there is less chance of infection, they don't play and touch them all the time. Some of the girls got theirs done at around 7 when they knew not to touch, not too many problems with any of them.

Piercing should only be done on ear not on the other part of the body like tounge or nose, that is why we call it ear piercing

I don't think her age really matters, i mean its just piercing her ears its completely normal. No matter what age she will get an infection. The sooner the better

I hope she won't get an infection but I know it happens. I want to find the best place to have it done so that the risk will be minimal.
