Books for the school children in the Philippines..

. When I first went back home to visit my hometown in the Philippines 14 years ago, I thought that the best thing I could contribute to the community is to set up a small library on the small block of land I purchased and invite children to come and read after school and on weekends.. This is after I saw the condition of the school when I went around to sticky beak.. They did not have a library. Setting up a library, no matter how small was impossible for me because I wasn't there and the people I spoke to about the idea were not interested. They seemed to be only interested in entertainment like they are really keen on you hiring a karaoke machine for them and they would sing all night. It seemed like the kids were not the priority.. For the first 3 or 4 years going back and forth staying only short periods, I organised gatherings for the kids.. prepared food and gave away some school needs.. But I observed that the adults were not interested with my dream for the kids over there.. So some of the books were damaged by humidity being stocked for a few years in the store room.. I managed to save some and gave them away to the children in the neighbourhood.. I still gather books but I send them to school..The school has now a new building and a small library..there is progress there and you can feel their pride.. Last year, we delivered a set of books and my collection of Times Magazines and National Geographics Magazines to them for the secondary students.. I was really heartbroken to see a library with no books at all but only old text books.. So this year I sent out another set of books for the primary school children.. They requested for story books for the little ones , so that's what I am going to send next year.. I will go to second hand book stores , ask my neighbours and friends who have children and grandchildren who have books they may want to pass on.. I have two big boxes of books here already but I am saving for the shipment.. It's not cheap to send balikbayan boxes.. The photo up there was taken last Feb.. I met for the first time the Principal of the school..They were very thankful!. At least even though my dream of setting up a library did not come true, I hope those books will help more kids.. Reading books is very important.. I hope the adults encourage the children to love books and read more rather than time playing games online at the computer shop opposite the school.. I hope the school let the students take those books home to read.. Those sets of encyclopedias are still good enough to help with their research... One thing I learned from my travel back and forth over there for the last 14 years, is that you can not dream for others.. But we can try to inspire them to dream for the better for themselves... Thanks kindly for your time reading .. Bess..

And I love people who pave the way for the children to dream. That is a noble endeavor, Bess. It is not easy to talk to friends about books. Books are not everybody's cup of tea. Or rather, this generation, the internet and the gadgets have overshadowed the books. Sigh. I, myself, am putting up a library, my books are aplenty. Useless the books without readers. May our endeavors reach success mode.

@epiffanie Thank you, Bess. I wish you the same. My problem is I have no one to assist me, plus, my daughters' well being demand much of my time. I am their cook, laundry woman, all around errand girl, driver and matron in waiting. Sigh. Before I could get down to my own affairs, I am exhausted. My library is not exactly near, some 5 kilometers from my home, passing through a junction and traffic. Sigh again. But I will get it done. The youth needs to read.

That says something - the hand that serves is holier than the lips that pray! I was happy to sponsor a deserving student for medical school along with my brothers. Each can do but little, but if each does that little all will be done! siva

So you are Filipino ma'am . It's nice to know that there are many people who love to help others especially those who are in need. " We must give more in order to get more. It is the generous giving of ourselves that produces the generous harvest .

Yes.. I am a Filipino who spent more than half of my life here in Australia ... I'm glad I had the chance to leave the country and get out of poverty .. I wish I had people who really cared when I was over there struggling to survive .. because I think I would have done great things too even I didn't go overseas ... Just one person who'll give opportunity is a great deal..

yeah, it's better to give it to the school since they have staff to handle the books. my brother left behind engineering books, cds and modules. i'm not sure if it will be of any use to anyone since they might be outdated already.

I did not know you were from the Philippines. Nice. I am truly amazed at people who never forget their roots, no matter where they are and giving back to their mother land. It is great that at a younger age, children are taught to read. For me, it is education that will surely help one rise from poverty and in any situation. One just have to persevere. Thank you, Bess. You have a good heart.

@mlgen1037 Yes..the attitude over there is to make sure that the children are "in" ... It amazing how many school kids I saw with cell phones in hands when their family is struggling to get by ... I hope that people over there encourage more children to read .. I have given some books that my boys loved to read when they were teenagers before the influence of modern technology .. I hope those books are being read...

Thank you .. Children here in Australia are introduced to books as young as two months old.. so by the time they reach one year old, they have developed a love for books.. Most of the poor kids in the Philippines never held books until they start school.. So it's really important that they have as many books as possible in their school libraries ..

@epiffanie youre most welcome, Bess. Sadly, that is the sad reality here in the Philippines. Because of (extreme) poverty, the parents cannot provide books for their children. If the parents are enabled, they give their children gadgets instead of books. Because of your post, I am thinking of ways to help as I like to read too. I am truly inspired.

Uhh. You truly are an amazing woman, Bess. I really admire your love for the next generation. You are investing on them. I hope that there would be more like you who believes that feeding them of knowledge will help them in their lives. God bless you as you give. By the way, where is your hometown here in the Philippines?

Thank you kindly .. I know a lot of people who are doing the same thing and believe in the same thing that the children are our future.. They must learn the importance of feeding their minds as they feed their tummies simultaneously .. If the mind is full, it finds a decent way to fill up the hungry tummies ..

As an educator, I am very happy to hear that you are doing this. My school has sent books to Zimbabwe because one of our teachers is from there and he was able to take them with him when he went back to visit, otherwise the customs fee would have been very high.
