I'm back in the saddle again. No, wait, that was Gene Autry. I took yesterday off, not spending too much time online at all (how weird is that??? I know), save for watching baseball games (which I technically do online with my MLB subscription, even though I was watching it on TV). That's enough of that. Back to the countdown of my favorite songs that have "big" in the title. For today's big -- and little -- song I'll turn to a favorite. Here's the "big" song today. The Big Light - Elvis Costello And hold that thought -- he'll soon be showing up on the other countdown! I hate to think this was written from personal experience, but I do know that Costello had an "incident" in the early 80s when he went on a drunken rampage, calling Ray Charles some unsavory names and whatnot. So maybe he knew exactly what he was writing about here. This is a beautifully and comically detailed look at a hangover, from waking up ("the big light came through my window and it opened up my eyelids, and it snapped 'em up like roller blinds") to the horrid after-effects ("the hangover this morning had a personality") to the confusion ("I had to face the 'who am I,' 'who is she,' 'what did I do'"). The one solace: "I'm thankful that I didn't open another bottle of 'inspiration'." I've used this before, in the Johnny Cash countdown (Cash recorded it in the mid-80s...Cash was one musically adventurous person!). I'll use it again. It's a terrific song. Strange. This guy doesn't look like the King. I think you mentioned him before. He dates some girl named Alison, right?
