The Dolphins are Back!

The area around Laguna Beach has a pod of approximately 200 dolphins which make the ocean waters off this beach town their home. However, it is rare to see them in the winter. Sightings are more common in the spring and summer. I assume they feed further out to sea in the winter. This morning, while walking on the beach with a friend, the water was alive with fun-loving dolphins. Here's a photo I took of our local dolphins swimming harmlessly around some human swimmers. It was such a treat and a wonderful sign that it is now officially spring in Southern California!

I love dolphins. I saw a dolphin on a resort. It was lonely and sad. I wish to see dolphins in the ocean, not in captivity.

@MrsPumpkins - I agree that dolphins are happiest when they are in the open ocean, not in captivity. However, whenever they are injured or sick, it is wonderful that we have facilities where they can be taken to recover, so they do not get killed by predators.

@Hannihar - We always had lots of pets when our kids were growing up, but we don't have a pet, now. Perhaps one day we will get another one.

@DeborahDiane for sure.. I vacationed in California once and I walked the beach one morning at 6am and saw a dolphin IN the surf.. I freaked as I was the only one on the beach.. and I thought I imagined it. and I had no one to back me up or confirm that I didn't hallucinate it.. it was magical.

@minx267 - I understand. I have seen the same thing often. Sometimes, when the waves are big, you can look into the ocean from the shore and see dolphins, sharks and sea lions under the water. It amazes me. Other times, the dolphins will "surf" on the waves. I have seen them moving right along beside human surfers. Incredible experience.

What a special site. I've never seen dolphins near a beach. And I grew up in Southern California.

@bagarad - Ha ha! That's true! Laguna Beach has very strict sewage rules for restaurants and other businesses, in order to make sure a minimum of bad stuff gets in the water. I wonder if that makes it more attractive to the dolphins? Who knows?

@bagarad - They seem to cluster in certain areas. I have never seen them off the coast of Newport Beach, but I regularly see them just a few miles south in Laguna Beach and a few miles further south in Dana Point. Isn't that interesting that they have their favorite beach towns?

Wow, that is amazing that you have so many dolphins in your area! We have many dolphins here in Florida too, so it is nice that both you and I can enjoy dolphin watching! I love them because they are such social creatures and are very intelligent and generally very friendly to humans.

@DeborahDiane They always do seem excited when they see humans around, so maybe that is exactly what's going on in their minds! I just can't believe how smart they are! And friendly!

@moffittjc - Yes, they are smart and friendly. I think they probably laugh at us "poor, awkward creatures" when they see us in the water! LOL

@moffittjc - We are both lucky to have dolphins around. I always feel happy and delighted to see them. I wonder if they get excited when they see humans and tell their babies, "Look at those awkward creatures trying to swim!" LOL
