I Made The Plans For Our Trip Home

We will be heading north from Florida on April 15th. I finally made my hotel reservations yesterday. We are spending our first night in Americus, Ga. I want to visit Andersonville, the location of the Civil War Prison. I chose to stay in Americus since it has a historic hotel which is worth a visit on its own. Monday we will dry up to my bother's home in the northern suburbs of Atlanta. We will stay there for two nights. On Wednesday we will drive to Greensboro, NC. On Thursday we will make our way to eastern Virginia where our friends live and we will spend 4 nights there. We take off from there on Monday and then spend the night in Pennsylvania before arriving at home in Connecticut on Tuesday. I know many people think we are crazy to spend more than a week driving home but it works for us. We need to be home for our church anniversary dinner on the 28th and we have allowed plenty of time for that.

I think that its an excellent way to head back home again. My parents always visited friends along the way when they used to come back home again from Florida. It allowed them to drink up what they would have to declare at the border and to break up that long drive back. My Dad loved visiting and would have gladly spent over a week coming home, but my mother was always very demanding on getting home as soon as she wanted to. I'm sure that it made for some "interesting" conversations in the car, or maybe no conversation at all.

lol That is funny since normally I am a chatty Kathy, get me in the car and I go silent as the grave lol Hubs is always complaining, every half hour or so he will say stop talking so much which means please talk to me lol

@Juliaacv I love saying the rosary while we travel but my hubs is not a rosary guy. I have a bunch of charismatic friends and father Joe and when we go to conferences and things We always say the rosary together. However, I always laughing tell the driver they are not allowed to raise their hands or close their eyes during prayer lol

@BelleStarr I always loved car rides with my Dad. As a very young child, every now and then he'd let on that he was lost. And I'd be sitting in the back seat with 2 of my brothers and I'd get scared. And then the last memorable car ride I went on with him, we went over to the nursing home in Detroit to visit an aunt, and we said the rosary for the very last time together. I think that I cried the entire time, just knowing that it was probably going to be our last time to pray it together on the road like that.

That sounds like a sweet journey, combining visits with driving. You might as well enjoy yourself, rather than the drive being just an awful chore.

@sallypup We try to keep it to between 250 and 300 a day. We drive for 4 to 5 hours and then rest.

I enjoyed the drives to and from Florida before we bought a car to leave here. We always spent two nights driving down, and a few days visiting places like Savannah and Charleston on our way home. Tomorrow we fly home in under 3 hours.

It sounds like you're going to have a great trip home. I've seen the movie about Andersonville. I will be interested in what you say about it.

I am sure that it will be pretty emotional. But I am very attracted to Civil war sites.

@BelleStarr I'm sure it will be emotional. I'm sure I would be too if I were able to visit such locations.

That is a long trip! But, you wont be on the road the whole time, probably not even most of it. So that is good! Plus whatever works for you guys, is what you need to do!

@BelleStarr right, putting it like that, its not crazy or a lot. my boyfriend and I drove 11(maybe 16) hours straight from MI to RI back in 2011, after our thanksgiving in MI. was sooo long, but we stopped to get food and gas, and learned a lot about one another like, we shouldn't take long trips together. lol

If the weather is good and everyone seems to be in good health, why not? (re: the long driving trip).

You take this like a mini-vacation and I think it is the best way to go. You take your time and you do not stress.

Exactly, one thing we have as retirees is time and it is much easier for us to have a relaxed trip.

@BelleStarr I fully agree, why to stress to be on the roads for hours when we can take our time.

@BelleStarr That IS a long trip. We'll be going 2,200 miles to see our son in Melbourne but there are no friends or rellies along the way - and not much of anything else either.
