Is cancer warning on coffee a good or bad idea?

A Los Angeles judge has ruled that coffee companies must carry a cancer warning label even though there isn't sufficient proof or studies to support the belief that coffee causes cancer. When coffee is roasted a chemical is produced that is believed to be a carcinogen but this can occur even in foods like French fries. According to the judge, the coffee companies have the burden of proving coffee does not cause cancer and they failed to do so. Some studies actually show that coffee can prevent certain cancers. Will warning labels on coffee cause you to stop drinking it?

Absolutely not. This is just another tactic to instill fear in people. People will believe anything when "A New Study has proven"...is placed in front of it. :-)

I do hope people are smart and read the details for themselves. They really have no real justification for it.

Dangerous carcinogens can be found in varying amounts in so many foods we consume every day - so should cancer warnings be put on all such foods - including grilled or barbecued stuff? The important thing I think is moderation in consumption - especially those foods that are suspect.

Yes I think it would create a dangerous precedent. Not sure what is behind it.

I think worry is the cause of most if not all our problems health wise. At least much more so than what we actually consume.

Wow that is surprising. There are so many contradicting studies on coffee who knows what to believe. I will continue to drink my 20oz thermos each day.

There are contradicting studies on most of the foods we eat and we still do. Grilling hamburgers was also supposed to cause cancer.

So this judge is completely ignoring the basis of the US legal system, which is INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. No, the burden is on the prosecutor. Of course, the judge is from L.A., and those judges are (to borrow a line from Gallagher) a bowl of granola: fruits, nuts, and flakes.

I always thought the prosecutor was the one who had to prove their case but this is a complete reversal. That song hit the nail on the head.

I'm a bit surprised that a judge has the power to order this.

A group brought the case to court and they won. Not sure if that is the end of it.

I drink coffee every day in the morning and in the office too, so daily two times coffee and one time tea. I feel active after having coffee.

The news cames as a shock, because so many people drink coffee in the world. Some would take the news for what it is worth and stop drinking coffee.

It would take a lot more than a label to stop coffee drinkers
