The challenge of grocery shopping

For me the challenge of grocery shopping is finding a place to put it all away. We are not well organized, and besides, I do not shop often anymore. At least not major shops. I love to buy fresh produce, but my refrigerator is not large or not configured well.. I also buy some items by the case, at Sam's Club. So that is the hardest part, and we shopped a total of four places yesterday, if you count the dairy store.

My dad used to store cases of can goods under our beds. This house I have an extra room so that is the place I store the can goods as well as the home canned food.

I have a friend who uses a back bedroom like a cold cellar. There is a plan, just it is not priority to hubby.

We have tons of storage space. And a huge freezer too.

I would like a different refrigerator at some point. I have a good deep freeze, and believe me the frozen good went there right away.

I like to stock up, but yep, there's not always a place for it all. We have 2 fridges . . . we inherited the one in the garage with this house - and for the longest time it was turned off . . . but in the past year we've been needing it (that has helped greatly, especially if I do ahead-of-time cooking). We have a teeny pantry - and currently I'm trying to figure out how/where I can expand where the food can go.

@GardenGerty I would love one big freezer - then I probably wouldn't shop so much .

@much2say I like a chest freezer for meat, and would love an upright for things like veggies and stuff.

We eat quite a bit of produce. Finding room for it is a chore for sure. Then our fridge likes to play tricks and freeze fridge stuff, just out of the blue. Oh, the kale is frozen! Thanks, fridge. Hilarious joke.

I know, I hate that. I cooked some greens because they got frozen.

@GardenGerty Same here. I also blended cauliflower into a sauce cause it got mushy from being frozen.

My son and daughter in law have taken over our refrigerator. Luckily, we have a refrigerator in the basement, an upright freezer, and small bar refrigerator. Meanwhile, the few items we bought fit in the vegetable bin. lol

I have my eye on a larger refrigerator, but it would also be good to have a small bar type refrigerator.

I've had this problem in the past but we have plenty of storage space at the moment - and there is only the two of us now which makes a difference.

We buy so many things by the case it can get crowded. I believe you showed us your storage once, and I was jealous.

@GardenGerty We have so much storage in this house. We did design it that way. This is about our 12th house at least so we should have some idea of what we want by now. We didn't build any of the others but we learnt from them.

Hubby built me a large pantry, need to organize it more and I told him I need this storage bin for some of the veges. What I would love is a root cellar like my Gram had.

I know what you mean. We don't have a lot of storage or room to put things. Our kitchen really isn't that big, which isn't fun.

We had two refrigerators, but one broke soon after Christmas. I have not yet replaced that one, so I was obliged to organize very well the only refrigerator we are using now.

I do my shopping once a week. I can fit it all in the fridge and cabinets. The freezer is full. I can't buy anything that needs to go in there.

I think it had been three weeks since we shopped. Freezer will hold stuff and I can manage most else, it is just I am tired and I wish it would take care of itself,

I'd love it if someone could come clear out my fridge and help me organize it better. I store cans and jars of food in my garage, unless it's something like mayo or dairy based, since it can get pretty hot in that garage.

@spiderdust I remember using a friend's garage as a club house when I was a kid. Heat bothers me much more now.

@GardenGerty We have one, but it was built too small to house a compact car. Since we can't use it for a car, it's largely a workshop/pantry/storage area. I'd love to insulate it and use it for a spill over play area for the kids, but right now it would be too miserable for them to be in during the summer.

I tend to shop multiple stores as well. I absolutely will not buy anything that is not on sale OR will not buy something at a higher price at one store when I know it is cheaper in another. As for putting things away, I generally know what I have and since most of my items are stocked up on, each and every thing generally has a place somewhere. There ARE times I do go a bit overboard on meat on sale and start to run out of room in the freezers.

I still have room for more meat, it is just the fresh veggies that are giving me fits today, and the eggs. I got it all in though.
