Do you have "Common Sense"?

"the obvious is never simple just like common sense isn't so common" Have you ever been told that the solution to a problem or a difficult situation you find yourself in only requires "common sense"? Although not expressly stated, the subtle implication is that of being "STUPID". Usually the person accusing us of this lack of "common sense" are themselves uninformed or don't have the know-how to actually make a sound judgment on our needs. "Common sense" has been equated with being practical and realistic. We believe people with common sense can be relied on to give good advice. But simply making decisions base solely from experience or "homespun wisdom" without further study is risking an uncertain outcome. If "common sense" is so common, we wouldn't be doing things that are harmful and not beneficial to us like our vices (smoking, drinking, drugs, gambling etc.), make rash decisions through impulsive buying or elect to public office people who lack the experience but look like our favorite movie stars. Next time someone tells you it only takes "common sense"(don't you just hate their haughtiness), ask them to elaborate further and watch confusion cross their face. Take the "common sense" test below to find out if you have any. (I failed miserably)
"If it's called common sense, why is it so rare" This video asks you a mere four questions. To pass the test, you must answer with simplicity and prevent you...

50 - 50 I might say... lol! Common sense is being eaten by everyday verbal abuse of people over us since we were a child, it is also eaten by insecurity and low self esteem. When people keep bullying us since we were young, I guess common sense will be worn out, even though, they have the right actions and words to express, it was eaten by fear that they might think differently again or think it is stupid to do so, so they do the opposite of what their common sense tells them to do. or sometimes they have common sense but they can't renounce the calling of their flesh that's why most of them have vices and do other harmful things in their lives. Sometimes, out of rebellion and stubbornness... that is why they set aside common sense.

You make a good point about people letting their emotions rule their actions. A majority of our decisions in life are decided on how we feel about the subject and not through any rational or logical thought process.

@josie_ maybe because I am too emotional... Most of the times I need to think logical also... I don't know.

@luisadannointed _Some problems require logic like when building a house or driving a car, but most decisions we make are emotion-driven like when we fall in love or what fast food to order..

Reminds me of the saying “Common sense is like deodorant. Those who need it the most never use it.”

As long as one makes "sense" it should not matter where it originated.

@josie_ Indeed, and why does it always have to be so smart. You ever get so frustrated with how smart things are. Dude, just trying to wash my clothes. My brain is already haggered from thinking all day and you want me to send a rocket to the moon with that type sequence.

@crossbones27 _I do feel nostalgia for the old fashion washing machine compare to the new model that have me scratching my head with all those integrated microprocessors supposedly to make my work easier. Maybe I'm just not computer-savvy. I usually call my grandchildren to press whatever setting is required.. Are machines to blame for people's intellectual decline? Perhaps "common sense" or worse, "thinking" would no longer be necessary in this new age of technological advancement.

My children are complete opposites when it comes to common sense. One was academically bright but had no common sense so threw it away. My youngest was not academic but has bags of common sense and has done really well in life. I failed the common sense test miserably

@josie_ She works in a high paid job in her home town. No she could never have been a teacher but she has done well since she left school. The school couldn't be bothered with her.

That common sense "test" was rigged. Fake test! If one is academically bright perhaps they should be in academe? Your youngest obviously have street-smarts and should make it anywhere...except in the teaching profession.

This test is the most stupid I ever read and the one who wrote this has no common sense. Take the questions about "crocodiles" (plural) as only one was "invited" to the Noah arc the reply is not good. The one who wrote the test failed to have common sense.

@josie_ I did not fail about the giraffe in the refrigerator and the elephant in the refrigerator, we did those jokes when I still went to school. The following were too silly.

@LadyDuck _Why anyone would want to put an elephant or giraffe inside a refrigerator IS silly. But this "test" and other brain-teasers are good mental exercises to help us think "outside the box".

Glad to know that you failed to get high scores for that common sense test, since I was told in my late teen to early 20s, that I was not blessed with common sense whatsoever. THAT worried me a bit back then. (And still does at times.) Thing is, I was admired (most often) for my knowledge (whatever was there), but when they (the Roman Catholic nun in charge of that boarding house) told me I had no common sense whatsoever (in front of the whole class, about a dozen around my age, and they all laughed at me, agreeing), I felt like they slapped me in the face... It was not a nice feeling.

You are not alone to have been belittled and humiliated by "educators". I got my rebellious nature from such experience..Fortunately this was offset by other more enlightened teachers

Funny test, I got 2/4. I thought the fridge could have kept both giraffe and elephant, got the 2nd wrong because of that. And the third, no comment. "Sense" is about sensations, as the word suggests, i.e. emotions and intuitions. Common doesn't mean good, or logical, but "common sense" is meant as having a good intuition. Maybe most people used to "sense" well, and now it's no longer the case. Nowadays, it's common nonsense.

@josie_ Agreed, sensations and intuitions can be very subjective. That's a great way to look at the result, I like balance, thanks for sharing your perspective.

The term "common sense" would imply a generally acceptable response but we all react differently when face with problems and difficult situations. What's good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander. If you think of it, getting half of the questions correct means you are both intuitive and rational.

Thinking things out in a logical manner or trusting one's "gut" feelings (intuition) both has it's uses. Knowing which to apply would constitute "common sense".

Okay I watch the test and got 2 correct. That test is dishonest. The premise is misleading (by omission). That test is designed to fail all adults. One vital piece of information was withheld...which you can only figure out after the fourth question is asked. Only then do you see a pattern, which was, all questions are related. I am over thinking it , right?
