Watching our Society Crumble

In my 56 years I have seen many changes in society. As time goes by things evolve and people change, believing in different things in middle age than they did when they were younger. What I see now I find very disturbing and it seems like our society is crumbling around our ears. For example, the silencing. A person will try to speak their truth and instead of others honoring their right to do so, they attempt to shout them down and make it impossible for them to speak. Silencing is not okay. We do not have to agree with what other people say, but as a society we need to respect their right to speak their own truth. Will there be book banning next? Already our society is attempting to remove artifacts of the past. Throwing things away does not change what happened in our past nor does it improve the future. Book banning next? If a person does not like a book should they have the right to prevent other people from reading the book? If a person is offended by something, should they have the right to prevent all other people from seeing the thing that offended them? Why do some people feel they have the right to direct how others live? And using tragedy for political gain really bothers me and I see it all the time in today's world. Until people learn to live together peacefully again, respecting each other's right to be the person they choose to be, protecting the right for every person to speak their truth - our society does not have a change of recovering. We will continue to crumble until we no longer exist or we live in a world without any personal freedom at all. Sad.

Great point! It makes me wonder why this is occurring. Humans seem to lean towards comfort, they prefer the easy way. Parents spoil the children and governments spoil the weaklings, by censoring 'what hurts them'. Weaklings because they're too sensitive, and don't know how to cope with criticism or disagreement except crying and complaining about it. We could just teach people to not take things personally, and to react peacefully towards opinions they don't agree with, but nope, censoring is way easier so let's stick with it.

I'm glad to see a thinking person with eyes wide open. Here is the problem: Who really wants to build the world that you desire?

I am not finding comfort in the news lately. I wish it were otherwise.

Yes I agree that our society is going in the wrong direction. I believe that we need to teach respect for one another. I don't think it is only the schools, but also parents should also teach their children to respect others.

Well said! I'm so disturbed that most others don't seem to see it.
