The imperfect lawn

In contrast to our neighbours who I wrote about a couple of days ago, our lawn is far from perfect. I don’t even normally think that it is worthy of the name of ‘lawn’, it’s a patch of grass and other plants, but in my opinion it’s far more interesting, especially in the spring. Neither I nor my partner are keen on mowing the grass, a tedious and time-consuming task, so it often tends to get left until it’s just too scraggy to be at all presentable. It doesn’t grow evenly, because half of it is in permanent shade for 6 months of the year, so it’s full of moss and buttercups. But as well as that, many other plants have popped up and are spreading under our ‘care’ – primroses, violets, cowslips, daisies and even an orchid. I’m waiting to see what appears next! This is one of my favourite corners in the spring. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2018.

Many would label those other plants "weeds."

A weed is just a plant in the wrong place you know!

@Daelii It's true though - grass in the flower beds or vegetable garden is definitely a weed, it should be in the lawn, but flowers in the lawn are weeds, they should be in the flower beds!

I personally don't maintain the lawn that is my husband's domain but I hate when it cuts down all the beautiful spring violets.

It is usually my partner that cuts the grass too, but he hates doing it so he's quite keen on alternatives. The wild-flower patch cannot be cut until June so that's a bonus in his opinion!

My "lawn" is exactly as you described yours. And I love it too.

Yes there should be another name for this sort of feature shouldn't there!

It is very difficult and expensive to have a "perfect lawn".

Absolutely, and not worth the trouble in my opinion.

Surely a display of the flowers you've listed is equally as pretty as a perfect lawn - and much more interesting.

Now that is my kind of lawn. Maximum green, minimum effort!

Yes the sterile uniform green carpet doesn't do it for me either!

@Fleura Good for you. If you plant dandelions then you can also eat them.

since this one actually landed on your post I will repeat what i said that didn't... I love wildflowers, and I have huge trees around my house so the grass grows slowly. We do have to mow but not very often. And there is still ice and snow all over our yards, the bulbs (spring flowers) are are popping up through the white stuff...

@PainsOnSlate I'm glad spring is coming at last, you must be glad to see the end of winter by now.

We had to have our lawn ripped up and replaced, thanks to the weeds. Now, we have a service that feeds, fertilizes, and treats it. We also use a landscaping service for spring and fall cleanup and mowing. It's a huge expense and very time consuming, but the neighbors do it, too.

We do need a small patch of grass to play games like croquet, but other than that we don't really need extensive lawns and I have plans to gradually replace our grass with something more interesting (and which doesn't need mowing!)

@Fleura I hear you! Eventually, we will sell our house and move into something not needing our care. It gets old, just like us.

Your lawn is SO pretty. My lawn is actually what you described yours as, but more weeds than pretty.

It's more a field with wildflowers than a lawn.

@aninditasen That's true and in general I do, but these ones seem to prefer to be among the grasses.

I prefer imperfect lawns! the chemicals people use to get "perfect" lawns kills the eco system. I try to keep it how God made it with a few additions!

I just treated my lawn yesterday with some Spectracide weed killer as it seems this year so far a ton of violets have cropped up, and although it does make the lawn more interesting I suppose, I still prefer my lawn to be...a lawn.

@porwest Thanks! I'm OK for dandelions though, especially as Little One likes to 'tell the time' with the dandelion clocks

I have looked at our lawn, the grass is tall, but there are plenty of different wild flowers blooming and I do not want to cut them.

@Fleura I cannot blame you for not wanting to mow the lawn. It is a tiring and hard job.
