Without Charlie for the Day

Charlie when he was about four months old.

It's a bit quiet in our house this morning. We've become used to the kittenish activity of Charlie as he races around using up all his morning energy before falling asleep for a few hours. But Charlie is growing up. We've had him two months now and he's a much bigger boy than shown in the photo here. He's fitted into our home nicely and there was much celebration this week when he finally decided to use the cat flap door all by himself. We're without Charlie today as he's gone off to the vet. Yes, he's nearly six months old and so we decided it's time for him to be desexed. Isn't that a horrible word. But that's what they call it these days. So, Charlie is at the vet to get neutered and lose his little boy bits and we'll be able to pick him up later this afternoon. Poor little boy. He did look so frightened as we took him off in his cage, but I'm sure he'll get over his nasty experience quickly. Cats usually do. Meanwhile the house is very empty and quiet without him.

You are wise to do this, even though Charlie will recuperate quickly. We are waiting on pins and needles for a call from our vet. Doodles isn't well.

Oh no, poor Doodles. I hope he is okay. What is wrong with him. At least Charlie is fit and healthy and will hopefully just be a little sore later.

@DianneN Oh, I'm sorry to hear that Diane, I do hope it's nothing serious.

@valmnz My son is getting off the phone now with the vet. It doesn't sound good. I'm crying as I'm writing this. I'll get the news and write a post.

@valmnz Desexed is a most unacceptable term. Even worse was the one used by my pretty young Australian vet. When I arrived with the cat she cheerily asked “Are you here for emasculation?” I shoved the cat in its basket at her and got out as quickly as possible.

Why do they have to be so clinical. Haven't heard emasculation here in NZ but desexed is definitely in vogue. Poor cats, the things we put them through.

@valmnz Getting the cat fixed is a common term here, but fixed is the opposite to what happens really.

@xFiacre yes my husband and I were just talking about that same term. We've always known this little op as having them fixed up. Fixed for good, no more night time adventures. Though I'm not sure Charlie has actually had any of that excitement in his short life.

Little do these pets know what they mean to us.

@valmnz We get strays here and one of them was wounded. The Vet had a tough time to get him and give him the required shots. He did not stay and we do not see him any more Charlie must be back with you now.

If he is anything like some I have had neutered he will be zooming through the house again in the morning. It does not seem to bother the younger ones for long

Is that a kind of nest he is resting in? He looks very comfortable there.

It's a funny sort of grass plant growing in our garden - with a few weeds thrown in I notice. You often find similar at the sand dunes here.

Around these parts I normally hear "fixed." The wife calls it "fixing what ain't broke." Opal will be 10 months on Wednesday, she got spayed at the end of February, her fur still hasn't grown all back in.

@ElicBxn our winters are not too bad here. A bit of frost is the worst it gets.

That is such a lovely photo. If it was a jigsaw puzzle, I would definitely buy it. Desexed, neutered, "fixed"... how can you fix something by breaking off a bit?

Poor little boy, I hope he will be fine very soon. Also Willy has been neutered, it is mandatory if the owner wants to let the cat free outside of the house.

Animals dfo seem to get over that sort of thing fairly quickly, I hope that's the case with Charlie.

I'm sure he'll be bouncing around the house with the same boyish energy before we know it! He's a real bundle of mischief this one

Neutering your cat is the responsible thing to do. I'm sure it did seem quiet with the cat away.

@valmnz I always thought they called it fixed. I know how you feel. Whenever I had to take one of my pets to vet the home felt very very quiet without any of them.

We used to call it fixed here, but that's not what the experts call it these days.

@valmnz Here is it still called fixed but it is called something else in Hebrew which I cannot remember. Sophie is fixed and so were my dog and cat before her.
