I just got traumatized from work

As everyone who knows me here, I am currently working on a Meat factory. I use to work on a clean air conditioned office but I left that nice job because It is my only way to become permanent to this country. I just have to endure some years and I will be permanent. I thought I already have the high tolerance in blood because of seeing animals being killed on a daily basis but no..... I just saw my co-employee lost his finger. A Moron from the splitting section decided to joke around and make everyone laugh. People at the splitting department are armed with a circular saw. They use that to split the animal carcass in half. One of the splitters lost his focus because of his friend making funny jokes. He didn't notice that the circular saw is cutting his finger. I just saw a man scream in pain after his finger got sawed. He was rushed to hospital and lucky for him the finger can be reconnected via surgery.

I see blood everyday because of my job but not human blood. people should not be talking and joking around while handling dangerous tools like circular saw.

@Jessabuma This is the machine they had been working with. It is originally used for cutting wood but they use it for splitting spinal chord of animals.

I am sorry for your co-employee. I am glad that he is able to have his finger again. But it is really hazardous to work there. You must be extra careful.

I can earn lots of money with Voices alone but I have to do this slaughterhouse thing if I wanted to be permanent here in Canada. Once I am permanent, I will quit. I will go to Toronto and pursue voice acting.

@mlgen1037 I have two more years before I become permanent. The reward from enduring this job is the best healthcare in the world.

Hi there Your Highness Emperor Albert Whisker! That's really scary. Well, I guess you just have to endure such workplace setting and maybe remind your co-workers to be careful next time? I wouldn't know what to do if I was there though, my bet is that I would have fainted.

I didnt faint but I don't think I can sleep tonight. I just saw a man who got his finger dismembered. This is the first workplace accident I had ever seen. His Blood spilled over the meat.

@CaptAlbertWhisker You need to see a doctor and talk about this. If it is so traumatic that it affects you later, you need to have contemporaneous records.

Ouch! My foolish co-worker took off the safety guard on a printing press and rigged it so it would still run. Well sure enough one day he got a finger caught in a gear and it smashed the tip off his finger! I was there, but didn't witness the incident (I just saw him holding his bloody hand afterwards). He lost a digit of his finger . . . the tip was too smashed to even reconnect. After that incident, we called him 9 and 3/4 .

@CaptAlbertWhisker After my boss came back from taking him to the hospital, he actually found the mashed finger tip on the floor. He tried to pick it up with a piece of cardboard (like a dust pan), but it kept scooting around . As a joke he nailed the mashed finger tip to the wall where my co-worker worked . . . it eventually shriveled and turned black - and smelled .

@much2say I am still shook by this event but I have to contain my self because I am going to go back to work in few hours. I hope people will focus more now and avoid joking around during the most dangerous moments of the shift. I always make sure I am fully focused because getting sleepy on a job like this can be very scary.

He will be on a leave for a week or 2 so he can avoid infection. It makes me think if he will comeback or quit the job.

@CaptAlbertWhisker If this accident traumatize you, I couldn't imagine how he feels. If he choose to quit, maybe that'd be for the better. Moral of the story : stay focus even when you joke around.

That is illegal. You should have a WorkSafe authority there, and by law they are supposed to take this seriously and do something about it, but they are probably corrupt. That is an unsafe workplace. If the idiot isn't sacked and/or the injured worker is screwed over, you need to look for another job.

I think this is common to all industries where people are surrounded by sharp objects and heavy equipment.

@ConVolines Yup accidents are common in factories. Companies just cover up.

Oh my gosh, its horrible! But i guess work time can't be alongside with joke time at your kind of work. Unless in offices where you can chitchat a few times while typing of doing some paperworks. I hope your friend is doing fine now. Lessons learned.

Oh, my! I can't stand seeing oozing blood much more a cut finger or any part. My knees turn to jelly when I saw one. No wonder you are traumatized. So, if you work as a clerical employee, it will not be credited for you to become a citizen there, but those odd jobs?

Canada have huge demand for these jobs but Canadians are not interested: Butcher meat deboner caregivers nurses Morticians Engineers Butchers and meat deboners are the easiest to obtain. I will endure this job until I am permanent.

Can they just wait and have a conversation / jokes for later? those are not really something to be left out when working. Hope that joker would be reprimanded / suspended for distracting his co workers.

They think they are such experts that they are now invincible from accidents. Sometimes fear is important. It keeps us safe. These people lost their fear and it made them too comfortable.

That was so unfortunate. It should serve as a lesson or warning to all employees to avoid playing around (like joking around) while at work, especially with a hazard like that.

I feel sad for your co-worker. I hope you will be able to shake it off. I wonder what and how the culprit felt after seeing how his actions harmed other people. I know he was just being funny, but not at other people's expense. There should be a right time and place for everything.

Circular saw is so sharp that they can cut metal. It is not something to play around with.
