I have the intentions of being weaned of metformin, a pil that treats diabetes. So I reduced the amount by half this morning, after I ate a full breakfast. Later I had a chicken on a stick ( left over part of the Chinese dinner of last night,) I took the dogs on a long walk since its gonna rain any minute and for a couple days. I came in, washed up and I felt exhausted, so I checked the blood sugar again thinking it was high because I did not take a full dose of meds., and there it was at 70 and headed down. This time I got a light yogurt. I began to feel better so I had the 2 small egg rolls from dinner last night. I think I will skip medication the rest of the day, I can deal with it a little elevated but not dropping low. The thing is.... I am not eating any differently than I was last month or the month before. My fingers are already sore from pricks. My crazy life!

I've changed my diet and am exercising more in an attempt to get off of that medication also. But the doctor's office called and my number went up .1 when I had my blood work done last week. That is so frustrating. I'm going to ask him if he can try me on a different medication as this one isn't doing my body any good any more.

At one point my doctor talked about taking me off metformin if I continued to do well. I have not had a good year, so it has not happened. I am not doing badly either. I take a couple of herbs that help, and have something else I am experimenting with. Did you know that metformin depletes your B 12? My doctor did not know this, but since I shared that info, she has monitored my levels and also suggests I supplement with it. Even if I were to stop metformin I would like monitor my glucose levels anyway.

I know my numbers daily, I check every morning and evening. No I did not know about the B12.

Keep an eye on it, I think the sudden change in temperature could be the problem.

This happened one before and he changed my medication. He thinks I can do without it if I stay away from the "whites" as in starches in foods.

Maybe it's time to talk to your doctor about taking you off the meds.

@Srbageldog My goal is to only take the hormones and that is it. Without the hormones I would be crazy. Since you are young I suggest you ask for them as well after your surgery.

It is strange how it dropped when you lowered your meds.

It dropped yesterday with a full dose, that is why I halved it, now I think I will let it go a day

Many of my relatives suddenly got diabetes problem when they reached 50 even though they hardly eat anything in excess. Things seem to be better for them when they walk every day.

I never had a problem till I had a hysterectomy and since those hormones were knocked out it messed with the hormone insulin. I do walk and I lift as well. My problem had always been junk food.

It being real low is not good, although high isn't good either. My dad had a lot of problems with is sugar. He did test me once and I don't think I would like to keep pricking my fingers.

Yeah, it sounds like you may not need it. You should call the doc though and see what he says about whether you should continue to take it or not though..some meds have bad effects if discontinued abruptly..not sure if that is one that does or not. Good Luck!

My father is now more or less 8 years of having diabetes. He's been using insulin since then. As I've observed from my father and the rest of my family members, once you have that kind of sickness you have to change your lifestyle.. food intake, kind of food to take, sleep, exercise and regular check up.

They put me on metformin when I was first diagnosed with diabetes. I couldn't tolerate it. It made me feel so awful . So I weaned myself from it and have treated my diabetes with diet and exercise for over a decade now. Good luck it can be done.

Just keep an eye on it. Hopefully you are making enough of your own now. Do you have a doctors appointment yet to see what he thinks?
