When dogs howl..

My friend's dog is here in our new place at the moment until they find a home for her to transfer to. They now live in a condominium and dogs, especially big ones, aren't allowed there. Soju is 10 years old and she's a really big Labrador. She actually looks like a male Labrador and most people are scared of her, but not us. This weekend until today, we noticed that Soju has been howling and so we told our friend that. Her reaction? "Oh no! She must be seeing some ghosts or evil spirits!" Soju doesn't howl according to her, but Soju used to live with a husky and I know huskies howl a lot. Could it be that the husky taught Soju how to howl? What do you think when dogs howl? Does it scare you? Do you think dogs really see some supernaturals when they howl?

Dogs have an extra sense I do believe that. I'm sure that Soju is in good hands at your place.

Yeah Soju is in good hands. It's 7am in the morning here and she keeps on howling. I think she misses, Tiko, the other male dog she used to live with.

@toniganzon She's probably howling hoping that Tiko hears her.

Another superstitious belief I've heard is that you try to get the dog's mote or speck from their eyes so early in the morning so you'll see what they have seen during the night, especially if they howled. Ha ha!

@neelia_lyn Why would it be unhealthy? It's not like you're going to eat it. You said just try to get it it.
• Philippines

@toniganzon I wouldn't dare try. Aside from it's unhealthy, I wouldn't want to know what the dog have seen during the night if ever it's true. :)

I also believed that way when we were young. We will be so scared when the dogs howl. However, I read that they are howling because they are calling for a mate.

Not necessarily. Here are the reasons why dogs howl. Soju I think is suffering from separation anxiety.
Why do dogs howl? It starts with wolf ancestry, but there are many reasons why dogs howl. Let's review some of them here.

@SIMPLYD You mean NOT to find a mate. It's cats that make that sound in finding mates though it's not called howling.

@toniganzon Thanks for this. Now, I know why dogs howl. So, it's necessarily to find a mate.

I'm not fearful of dogs that howl. She may be lonely and misses her mommy.

She must be. But my husband's friend visits her everyday. He's the one who feeds him actually. They don't want us near Soju because she can be unpredictable. She's old and can be very nasty. She isn't as sweet as she used to be.

I had a puppy labrador who howl just for the fun of it. My dog used to get on top of a rock and howl, its sound was heard by the people around who used to say; ¨your dog makes a very peculiar sound when howling.¨

Nobody knows exactly why they howl but experts would say it's expressing their emotions.

The dog doesn't understand the new surroundings that it is in @toniganzon . She has not adjusted yet. Dogs go by sense of smell so it is important that they make sure her blanket and bed are shown to her and that she is walked around the condo to take in the different scents. In human years, she would be 66 years old, so imagine a human being placed in a nursing home. Different surroundings, smells, noises, etc. The dog senses the same things and is confused about where she is.

@toniganzon Hmmmm; well then, that is strange that she would be acting like that. She's not sick or anything is she? I know I've got a cat right now that has a stuffed up nose and he's doing a lot of crying.

It can also be a sign of dog anxiety. They may howl because they're afraid or sad. I remember my husband's female Doberman howling the night before our wedding! It was so weird. As if she knew that her master was leaving the house. But, yes, we've had dogs that howled in the middle of the night as it seemed they saw or felt something supernatural.

@toniganzon Maybe he misses sleeping with his master nearby. :( Labradors can be very attached to their human friends.

That dog is just missing her owner, hence the howling! Our neighbor, the one who lives across the road to us (and the one who lives next door to us), both have dogs which howl whenever the owners are not home. Poor our ears!

Huskies howl a lot especially if they are alone. Out neigjbors husky howl and howl. A never-ending howl. But they say that when a dog howl, they can see and feel something. When the husky was new here, I am terrified qhen I heard him howl. Now I am used to it already.

I think the dog really misses your friend, so maybe she's howling because of that. Even dogs have separation anxiety from their owners!

We don't really know whether it's true or not that they see spirits. Could be or she's just having some separation anxiety.

My mom thinks that if a dog howls, someone will die or it sees a souls. I think that dogs howl when they are anxious. It is their way of saying that they miss their owners.
