Organic Recycling?

Does your community offer this, an organic/compost recycling program? This is new to my city so me and my roomies are going to give it a go since we eat so much produce. Our organic recycling program takes any part of fruits or vegetables, coffee grounds, used coffee filters and paper towel, cardboard food boxes and they pick it up once per week. One concern so far is how much it is going to stink and also if it will attract animals. And also, I should find out where the compost goes and what they do with it. Do you have this program too? Or do you compost on your own? How has it been going?

There isn't a program out here that does that, but we do it ourselves and burn the rest of the trash

Aha. Do you use it in a garden? Or just let it decompose?

@maezee a little bit of both. We also have over four acres so it doesn't effect us with the smell as much!

We make our own organic compost in the backyard. :) It's been very helpful to our plants. We never had to use artificial fertilizer to boost their growth.

That is awesome. Good job! Do you attract a lot of animals too?

We don't have anything like this but it is alright as we do our own, we have rabbits and chickens and then when we mow along with the veggies and such.

It does seem like it will stink after a week and cause fruit flies in your house. Can you keep the container outside and take the scraps outside to dump into the container? I think this is absolutely wonderful and I would love if ur town did this. I compost my own scraps but just grass cuttings, fruit peels, coffee grounds etc. No meat! That's meat they do accept the meat there. They don't accept much for recycling pick up here just some plastic bottles and all glass and newspapers. I wish we were about to recycle more where I live.

That's really a great program. I remember back when I was in elementary school, we were taught about that. And people in small villages were taught about that to and they did it back then.

We've just discovered that a lot of our recycling material was going to China but now China is not taking it anymore. It is causing a major headache for cities.

Nope... or maybe I am too busy at work. I always leave the house once the sun was out, and go home before or after midnight. No time to talk to our neighbors.

Yes we have this programs for those who do not own a garden. I do my compost in our own garden. You have to let the compost rest a couple of years before to use, but then it is a good fertilizer.

We don't have that program here. I hope it goes well and they pick it up before it really starts to stink and attract fruit flies.

I don't think so. I live in a city where people hardly recycle.
