If it's not one thing...now the gout has attacked

I'm the guy who never has health problems, needs no prescriptions, just takes vitamins and eats well. 2018 has been a test of my patience and my health status. January began with a bad non-flu virus that knocked me flat for two weeks, followed by a back strain that made all movement difficult for about two weeks. March passed with no problem, but the trip to Texas in early April was followed three days after our return by what turned out to be pneumonia, brought under control in a week by an antibiotic called Levofloxacin, one of those powerful ones with scary potential side effects. I will take my last one today and it helped a lot. So, overnight, I developed a swollen, quite painful joint in my left foot and know it is gout. That I am treating with ice, elevation and copious quantities of sour cherry juice adding turmeric as well. The cherry juice has helped relieve the gout quickly in the past. Cause of the gout attack? I had no wine for a week while ill, started having it with dinner two nights back, so that is a maybe. It could be a side effect of the antibiotic too. I have a follow up appointment Thursday to make sure my lungs are clear, so will ask some questions. It is odd how one thing after another is after me this year.

My late father in law had gout . . . I worry for my Hubby although he has not shown any signs of it yet (but I guess it runs through the males in the family? I know one guy at the grocery store I shop at . . . he says he "controls" his gout by not eating certain foods . . . he knows very well that if he eats these foods, it will come back. Hope the gout pain goes away soon!!

@JamesHxstatic I'll have to remember that if it ever happens to Hubby. Where do you find sour cherry juice? Is it cherry specifically or can something red/sour like pure pomegranate work too? Do you use fresh turmeric or just the powdered stuff?

That sour cherry juice, drinking maybe a quart today is helping already.

@much2say It is cherry specifically and I bought four quarts at Trader Joe's this morning. I used a quarter tsp of turmeric in two different glasses. I can walk much easier now.

I had that kind of virus earlier this year, too. And i sympathize with you because of the gout. I have had it in the past and I can honestly say it was one of the most painful things I have experienced

@JamesHxstatic Good! Exercising the joint is the best thing if you can stand it. I wound up taking prednisone to get the inflammation down three different times. I hope you don't have to.

It is no fun, but I have used ice on it this morning and drank a lot of sour cherry juice, some with tumeric added, and the pain is not as bad when I have to walk.

@peavey No, I am sure the cherry juice is already working to flush the uric acid away.

James, it seems it's one of the side effects of Levofloxacin. It seems that male over 60 who takes this antibiotics can develop this problem. I hope that once you stop taking this medication you will be fine.

@DianneN It is not bad today. But reading about side effects of Levofloxacin concern me, such as rupturing an Achilles tendon even after dosage is through. My heel is swollen, so I will be asking questions for sure.

Me too! I have been in my recliner all afternoon with my foot elevated, drank more than a quart of sour cherry juice, some with turmeric added. It barely hurts at all now when I stand and walk.

I can understand your pain dear friend! Excessive consumption of red meat can also be one of the cause of gout ...I hope you never had this in excess in the recent past! Thanks @JamesHxstatic!

OH yikes, I guess we will have to hope you are done with your health problems. I was having a problem with some soreness in my index finger, it wasn't going away, and I was starting to think it was arthritis, but today it isn't hurting so I guess it wasn't. Also, ocassionally my toe hurts..and I wonder if it is gout..but it always seems to go away..so I guess not!. I hope you are better now!

Hubby had a year like that. Your foot looks very painful, and I am glad you know about cherry juice for gout. I took that antibiotic, after having another one. I have literally been sick all school year with one thing after another. I feel for you.

Oh no! Hope I don't have gout! My right foot seemed to be a bit slightly swollen in the last few days too, but in my case, I hope it was only because I had some sort of chilblains. Hope you feel better soon. Just checked, older women do have gout but less than men in general.

Yes, oddly, men get it more often. I have a flare up every few years.
