So, this is how it feels...

It was an early call, darkness still covered the poorly lit highways, I had to tailgate a speeding delivery truck, to get a good speed. My elder daughter cautioned me to slow down, while my younger daughter was in deep slumber at the back seat. Nope, I said, I will lose my guide. Truck may be fast but that's St. Raphael, the Archangel showing me the way. Even with driving glasses, my vision is still, sigh, defective.. The parting hug at the drop-off bay of the departure area, NAIA 3 was tighter than usual. My daughter had been places but this is the first time she is venturing another continent at the other side of the world. At Narita Airport five hours later, she sent me a photo of her delayed lunch meal, a bowl of chicken teriyaki, with a caption: legit. I had a good laugh, for I did tell her not to go cheap on food. Narita food might be expensive but go partake genuine Japanese food. That's 900 yen, or 9 dollars, or 450 pesos. That's okay, I thought, considering Japan's economy and lifestyle. Said my Rosary again, for that was only the beginning of the 27 hour flight. By morning, a facebook post showed she was literally chilling in Detroit, awaiting a flight to Washington, DC. By lunch, I received message she has finally arrived. With chores set aside, errands attended to, I entertained musings about my daughter's achievements, this, by far, was the most exciting of all. Last week, she was at Marawi, and sigh, I would admit to anxiety. I couldn't help but admire the courage and determination, who would ever think she would get that special visa and fly to America, when so many Filipinos queue Roxas Boulevard to get one. It was probably her dream, for she has the wanderlust, but for her to make it happen, with no strings attached, all because of her dedication to her work and seriousness of purpose, sigh, I stand proud she is my daughter. But there is that special feeling, I couldn't think of an apt word, that feeling that comes from imagining that that once irrepressible girl has now truly spread her wings, literally soaring high, to a far distant place, as calm as an eagle, and I got to watch her do it on her own. I continued with my prayers, our good Lord keep her safe and blessed, for she deserves everything she is experiencing now. That's my daughter.

@Hannihar Thank you. Although sometimes in a family comes a black sheep, generally, children turn out what their parents rear them to be.

@eileenleyva That is very beautiful. Not all parents feel that way about their kids.

Thank you, Louise. I did see her resolve to learn at three months old, when I held a Snowhite story book and her eyes focused on the pictures and the colors. Then, her hand reached out for the book. Since then, the books started filling every corner of our home. The books are voluminous now, and sigh, I need shelves. A mother must see the intelligence given her children. If she misses that and fails to enhance the child, then it's like a failure on the mother's part. That is why I encourage all mothers not to entrust their children to anyone till the child is 8 years old, especially the yaya.

@mlgen1037 Of all the beauties, from flowers to the tiniest of bugs, and all the rest of wonderful creation, children fascinate me the most. Pray that God blesses you with children who can bring love and compassion to everyone.

@eileenleyva You are most welcome, Eileen. I think you did the right thing in raising your children. Now I know too what my dad was trying to convey to us while growing up. It is to be a "parent". That is what I want to when I have my own children. To give them the opportunity to explore and discover, and us parents would be there to guide them.

That is wonderful to hear that after such a long journey she got to her destination safely. What is she going to do in Washington DC? I am very encouraged by this because I have not had to take a plane since the world went all crazy and in the summer I will be flying to the US from Latvia. The flight only takes 12 hours but I am so nervous now you have made me feel better about it all. Glad you have one more daughter to keep you company.

A three day courtesy call to the US Government, including the White House, I believe, Then she flies to Massachusetts where the real work begins. Oh, dear, many people have been affected by that lunatic act of terrorizing the world. But do not let that disconcert you in living a wonderful life. We have got only one life and we cannot live in fear. Funny but in my country, people scramble for cheap plane fares US bound every September. One friend vouched that she was literally the only passenger on a domestic American flight. So, she enjoyed the flight all to herself. That was in the succeeding years of that unfortunate event. The scenario is different now. Have a safe trip, from Latvia to your home state. Enjoy the ride again. Godspeed.

@RasmaSandra That is such a happy plan. Gosh, if only I could embrace you tightly, too. Wow, coming back would be a new adventure. I am sure you are delighted like a child on a maiden journey. Will keep a prayer for you.

@eileenleyva thank you. It will be this June but I know how to help myself. I am returning to the US which is my homeland so I have a one-way flight and I will purchase first class or business class ticket so I get to have special service and won't be as nervous. Then when I get to the US I can kiss the ground and do the dance of joy

Thank you. She wants our country to be as beautiful as other countries. She wants the people to know that we do not have to endure the shabbiness if only we could actually transform our communities into walkable and shareable green spaces.

@kobesbuddy In one of her lectures, she discovered that one of the pioneers for urban planning was sitting at the back row. After the class, he approached and congratulated her and said he was glad there is still somebody who pursues the ideal and actually works on it.

@eileenleyva But other's maybe don't have the same goals or drive, that she has. They've probably given up or view these changes as an impossibility.

I did tell her exactly that, when once she was dampened by the power play of bosses. Said she was meant for greater heights.
