Do you feel appreciated?

In my psychology class last night, we were discussing how many people feel underappreciated. Strangers don't acknowledge each other much in the Bay Area, and even at work, bosses and managers are driven and fast moving, and rarely stop to thank you for a job well done. I've been at jobs where I was underappreciated, but recently that hasn't been the case. Both parents (at the preschool) and students (at the college) have been expressing thanks for my hard work, and it really does improve my mood ("happiness" was the topic last night). Yesterday night, I came home to an email from one of my woodworking/speaker restoration "customers." He had promised he would send me a picture of one of the pieces I restored for him once he got it put back together. I had assumed he'd "forget," but he did not. I had good dreams last night and woke up in a good mood this morning (I'm on my first cup of coffee now). Do you feel appreciated? Do expressions of appreciation change your mood for the better?

I don't feel appreciated, despite the work I do. I know I am, but there's too much of the opposite in my past to come away feeling positive about it. Regardless, I am optimistic about the future. It would be nice to shed this sense of disconnect I feel inside.

I have felt this sense of disconnect. It can make it hard to internalize it even when one IS appreciated.

@TheHorse There is a future I want, but it is hard to reach out to it like I once could. In the past I was driven to achieve it, but now that I can do so, it has never felt farther away. I often wonder what it is I'm waiting for? There's no logical excuse that I can possibly think of now.

I'm retired now but when I was working there were plenty of times when I felt unappreciated. I knew I gave 110% while others were slackers. But I'm very lucky that my family make me feel very loved and appreciated Glad you got up in a good mood this morning and it's funny how an expression of appreciation can make you feel better. I would feel the same

I'm glad your family was there to make you feel loved and appreciated. It's interesting how far a little thanks/appreciation can go.

No I don`t. Tony tells me he does appreciate all the things I do to keep him alive but in other areas of life I would say no, seems like people expect me to do what I do and should not be thanked at all.

Yes, if one helps others consistently, it comes to be "expected."

Appreciation gives motivation to continue and put best efforts. With support even rock cutting task seems easy.

Yes! Ideally self-reward would be enough. But in the real world, we need some strokes from others.

It is Sad anymore than many times people cannot take enough time out to Thank someone for a job well done. Most of the time they are too busy, but when something goes wrong they are the first to bring it up. Would make jobs a lot easier if more people could say Thanks

What did you dream about Pony...now I am curious... No...not really. I am inclined to look at appreciation as either this person has too much time on his or her hand, does nothing, climbs the ladder by riding on others ego, or this person has an ulterior motive. The second one is often on target. LOL. I could show you here on myLot how somebody like that used to operate. LOL.

@TheHorse You never remember your dreams? I see shark taking a good bite from my mid part and me staring straight at its eye numb with pain..I am terrified of sharks. And the guy who asked me to adopt him...he said "I have never felt so loved in recent times" when he came to my place. Groan...that is so odd from a grown up coming to our place the first time, with whom I hardly kept in touch...just enough to see he feels comfortable to stay at my place when he comes here for treatment, so that he can save on stay charges, works to100 dollars per visit. Helping people often gets me into such soup. Still I continue..who knows, I might come across goldmine. lol. So one bad apple or even 100 bad apples don't deter me. You are different I know. :) Here is how those flatterers work. Read thesids response on June 6th in my box...he began with "loved the way you wrote it" and second one "knowing the loving lady you are"...despite me having expressed all my views not only on boards several times before, but also verbally at my home, and again in that box, he still believed he could with get away with his wishes with such flattery.. these people don't accept gentle "no" or even blunt "no" as was in this case. Note he called my father "grandpa". LOL. He was not accepting the gentle no. Lucky me, porridge and hora understood what I was saying.
...of my grandparents. [em]cheering[/em] This Sunday, June 5, 2016, was their 60th wedding anniversary. We didn't have any party planned because my...

I felt very appreciated with my last job, I was sad when I had to leave it. I would even go over and check my clients when I wasn't working to make sure they were ok. I only hope I can get another job like that. That cabinet is beautiful by the way.

@TheHorse Our moods can reflect if we feel appreciated or not. I feel very good when I did something and someone really liked it then a big smile goes on my face and I feel I did something right in my world.

@Hannihar You know what I mean, Jelly Bean? I enjoy doing stuff (today, I was asked to fix a play structure and did so with the "help" of some of the kids), but I also enjoy it if someone appreciates my efforts. We'll see if anyone thanks me for fixing the play structure tomorrow. I did it late in the afternoon.

Yeah most of the time I feel appreciated. I like my work. My leader is kind and friendly. He knows well who is doing a good job and who is not doing a good job. I think everyone likes appreciation he or she deserves. It will motivate us to do better.

I'm glad you feel appreciated for your work yesterday and at the preschool. It's hard to do a good job for anyone when your work isn't appreciated. At the call center, I was just another body in a chair.
