My husband and I recently hosted a Town Hall Meeting for Katie Porter, the Congressional candidate who is running against Mimi Walters in District #45 in Orange County, California. We held the Town Hall Meeting in one of the clubhouses in our retirement community. Orange County is historically a solid Republican California County. Not very long ago, it was one of the most Republican Districts in the United States. However, our current Congresswoman Mimi Walters has chosen to vote and act in ways which have turned people against her, including many local Republicans. * She has voted with the Trump agenda 98.5 percent of the time, even over the objections of Republicans in her District. * For example, she voted to support concealed weapon reciprocity, which would allow people to bring concealed weapons into any state if they have a permit from any other state. In California, which has some of the strictest gun laws in the U.S. and one of the lowest rates of gun violence in the nation, concealed weapon reciprocity is VERY unpopular, even with Republicans. * Another example, is when she voted to support more off-shore drilling. This is also VERY unpopular in California, even with wealthy Republicans who are the ones most likely to own beachfront homes. I could go on with at least a dozen more examples, but I think people understand why Mimi Walters has become a pariah in her Congressional District. She refuses to do any Town Hall meetings. She will not meet with most of her constituents. Her office is in a high rise and the door is locked most of the time, making it nearly impossible for anyone to go talk to her about any topic. During Congressional recesses, she is all but invisible. Until recently, she did not even live in her District, but in another home she and her husband own outside her District. With all the bad publicity, she has moved into a house in her District. As a result, we are supporting Democrat Katie Porter. Katie has the endorsements of Senator Kamala Harris, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Emily's List and a number of others. She is the Consumer Advocacy Attorney who was chosen by Kamala Harris to head up the agency which helped consumers who were going through foreclosure during the last recession. She has worked alongside Elizabeth Warren on a variety of issues. She is currently a law professor at the University of California Law School in Irvine. She is also very energetic, as well as a nice, pleasant and very approachable woman. The Town Hall meeting my husband and I hosted was a HUGE success ... better than I ever expected. All 150 seats were filled, more chairs were brought in, and people were standing in the back of the room. My husband and I have loved the experience of supporting Katie Porter's Congressional campaign. If she wins against other candidates in the California primary in June, she has a very good chance of beating Mimi Walters in November.

Well, that is neat that you actually hosted it. I would vote for her, but not my district. The Mimi Walters sounds like a female Trump. Trying to hide everything she does. Hello, what part of public servant do you not get and why did you run if you are going to hide? To be fair Trump does not hide, but does hide his shady business deals.

@crossbones27 - Yes, describing Mimi Walters as a female Trump is very good, although she really does hide. I actually knew her before she ran, and I voted for her, even though she has always been a bit "cold". In our district, I assumed we would have a Republican Congressperson, and I thought it would be good to have one I knew. I never dreamed she would go into hiding after being elected. You would think she was in a witness protection program! I have never laid eyes on her since she won her first election! Katie Porter is so warm. She hugs everyone she knows at all her events. It is difficult to believe she is such a hard-hitting attorney!

@crossbones27 - I agree with you completely! It is so frustrating and I really resent our current Congresswoman for hiding from her constituents. I do not believe Katie Porter will do that. In fact, she has already signed the Town Hall pledge and promises to hold more town hall meetings once she is elected. I hope you have some candidates in Redlands who have earned your enthusiastic support. I know that sometimes it is hard to find candidates we are excited about.

That would be wonderful. I love the thought of ultra-conservative old Orange county, cradle of the John Birch Society, turning blue.

@JamesHxstatic - Apparently, the county is much more evenly divided between Blue and Red these days. Hillary Clinton won the vote in our district, so there is a real possibility that Katie Porter could beat Mimi Walters. My fingers are crossed that we can make it happen. I would love to see it happen, too.
