Problems with a Hobo

United States
April 27, 2018 4:04pm CST
We have a hobo, that stays in front of the liquor store a block away. He has now walked over to this neighborhood, and had decided to knock on our door. Having a corner house, is becoming a pain, these day. No I can't move and not going to any time soon. He has been here, and we open the door , we do have a locked screen, so no one can get in. So he asks for eye drops, or a quarter. We say no, and then he will say disgusting things , call us names. If we are outside, he will come up to us same thing. The liquor store has called the police, when he there, bothering the customers. We have called the police, by the time he gets he he is gone and they can't do anything. Getting very frustrated with this he threatened, to break our windows. Police have only talked to him, and scolded him , so he keeps this up. Any suggestions?

That is horrible and you should not have to put up with it. Sadly, you will have to. In my youth, people like that were institutionalized until they got better, taken care of with clean beds and good meals and therapy. Now it is against the law to make anyone take their medication and it's very hard to get them committed for even a 72 hour observation period. I'd love to see someone sue the ACLU for all the torments these poor folks go through because they don't even realize they are ill, won't seek treatment, and often die on the street because we can't interfere in their "lifestyle". I would definitely keep some pepper spray by the door just in case. Can you film him when he threatens you? Are there other people he has bothered that can file a complaint with you? If all else fails, call the media--someone will have to do something if the situation gets enough publicity.

People here, don't like to get involved. Just people anywhere, won't get involved. He has a very nasty mouth, and He hasn't gone to anyones door but ours, That is all I know of , at least no one has said anything, but us.

@CookieMonster46 I would film him and send the file to a local news station. Maybe you could get a few words filmed from the liquor store manager? If the police can't do anything--or can't because of the laws protecting the homeless--you need to be the squeaky wheel. This man could actually do you physical harm.

@CookieMonster46 I'd stop going to the door, if you know it's that hobo.

He lives on the street, he sleeps in front of the liquor store, the manger there, can't do much, he has a lot of illegals that are in the parking lot. Living in a van, he complains, to the police, and the neighbors at that end of the block are complaining to. What is this world coming to when you can just live in the parking lot of the store.

@kobesbuddy the turn their back and go on the wall of the liquor store. Some will just go in the street, doesn't matter who is looking. Last year, there was a empty lot next to the liquor store, they set up tents and chairs and moved in the lot.The city came and removed all their tents, and closed up the lot, So now they do not have it.

@CookieMonster46 What do they do for a bathroom facility? What about harsh weather? This is terrible!

If that happened over here he would be arrested. I think you will have to ignore him and keep going on at the police to do something about it, If it's anything like over here they probably take ages to come by which time he would be gone.

@CookieMonster46 That's awful! What if the person had killed someone. Are your police always like that?

yes, but the time they get here, they are gone. The police here re just bad, example last night i heard a car doing wheelies.. the spinning in circles. Well i heard a crash next, I ran out, and the car doing the wheelies, lost control went through a fence, and patio. The police slowly show up and the neighbor runs up to the officer tells him he was doing wheelies. Officer tells her get out of here, why are you telling me this.. and asking the driver was he alright.. Didn't he care the guy was doing all this spinning, it could have been much worse.

I think you need to file a complaint, you should be able to do that without the police actually being there, he has threatened you and that is illegal anywhere.

@CookieMonster46 A threat is a threat and I would make them take it seriously. Go to the newspaper and complain if you have to.

I guess the police don't take it serious because it is a hobo, and they don't think he will actually do anything.

Lately all this stuff just bothers me, it shouldn't matter this is a corner house. This block is pretty decent, except for the complex across the street, and the landlord is getting rid of the bad people . But there remains a lot of homeless and other types still here, that hang at these liquor stores.

@CookieMonster46 Maybe he's just needing help, who knows. but acting crazy and coming to your house is a no-no.

He knows where to go, we have something local, another neighbor said he used to be the poster child for the rescue mission. He doesn't have normal conversations, yells and screams.

@db20747 I believe he may have a sign up. The problem is he has others hanging out there at the store, and he is afraid of any retaliation.

@CookieMonster46 they may have to get the manager to post that a panhandler is not allowed on the premises at the store when he he is unruly and call the police when he returns!!! If he becomes too unruly the police will handle him from there!!

@CookieMonster46 I'm under the impression that if the matter keeps getting reported they'll do something about the hobo.

Do you have a way to register what he says when he is menacing? Do this and show to the police.

They probably can't do anything because he hasn't broken any laws. He's a nuisance and I hope he gets the message soon that he isn't wanted.

Wow, thats awful, do you have any type of fence around your yard? Or a dog? Can't believe the police won't do anything, maybe a ticket for loitering (not that he would pay) but they should be doing something especially when he is making threats.

No there, is no fence around this house, this house is my grandmothers, and we are living in it paying rent to my aunt. We help take care of her too, so they are one house over, so we are kind of stuck here for now. We have a big sign outside, says no loitering, for whatever good that does, people still come up here, knocking , begging.

@CookieMonster46 I couldn't handle that, I would have to have a fence put up, even a small one. Seems to deter people from coming up

The next time he knocks don't answer the door. He will keep knocking if you keep answering.

We can't see who is out there, without opening the door, the peep hole you can't really see out of.
