This could not be happening in your country but I have seen this a lot with my friends. I call it abuse of English because the words that they use is really confusing and annoying. Examples are "prea" instead of a prayer. Just because the words sound the same does not mean that they should substitute each other. Does this happen where you come from?

Maybe they do shorten some words, which do not sound right.

Interesting post , I appreciate your attention for details! I am coming from India , but here we never do such things, yes there may be some grammatical mistakes or typos, but deliberately using such substitutes is unheard of at least in India! Thanks a lot for your interesting discussion @aureliah !

Some people shorten words to be able to write or talk quicker. I am an English person and I often hear people talk in a way with words that are shortened. In some other areas of England I have heard different accents like ones from Birmingham, Liverpool and Newcastle. In Australia the people shorten some words and I must listen carefully. G' Day means Good Day for example.

i still have the learning feedback diary of a student last 2004 where he mistook the word MEET with MATE.
hence, his diary of "I will meet my patient in OB ward", it is written as "I WILL MATE MY PATIENT IN OB WARD". i hope this student finally passed the licensure examination for nurses.

Nobody can batter the English language better than English speaking people. lol. It is what it is, I suppose. I'll check someone whenever I feel it is appropriate to do so when a word is misused. This ESPECIALLY happens in spelling. Like to, too, and two. There and their. Lose and loose. It can be VERY annoying at times.
