Poor Poor Poor Poor Doodles

We are back from the veterinary clinic where Doodles had an examination and an echocardiogram. As expected, he has a serious heart condition. He was diagnosed with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.
Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy is a genetic disease that occurs when cardiac muscle fibers are in a disorganized pattern. This results in more muscle fibers being laid down within the ventricle creating higher pressures at rest. The increased ventricular pressures during rest force the atrium to stretch as it attempts to overcome the elevated ventricular pressures. This can lead to other heart problems including blot clots and congestive heart failure.
As a result of the tests, they found an enlargement in his left atrium, asymmetric septal hypertrophy, systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve, and to top it all off, a false tendon on the heart.
How serious? Out of 1 to 10, Doodles is a 6. He will be on 3 prescription drugs and baby aspirin. He must also lose 3 of his 17 pounds, so barely any more treats.
Doodles needs more lab work in two weeks, and a recheck echocardiogram in 3 - 4 months. His prognosis is guarded. No knee surgery is allowed until the vet checks his heart again.
We will do everything in our power to help our precious boy live as long as possible.
By the way, today is Doodles' 10th Birthday.

Such sad news for Doodles to get on his birthday. I hope the prescriptions help.
He's such a beautiful cat and I know how much you love him.

It is indeed a sad day, but it could probably be worse. So sorry, it will not be fun for anyone..least of all Doodles! At least you have some great vets to work with. I had a vet one time who I am certain was responsible for the premature demise of one of my beloved kitties. Anyway, All the best to you and Doodles..

@DianneN Yeah, I mean I am sure it wasn't deliberate..but he really had no business treating small animals, he was a large animal vet for years..and he was very awkward and not experienced with family pets..plus, he was kind of in the twilight of his career..who knows how long ago he went to vet school?

Happy Birthday Doodles.
I'm so sorry you got that kind of diagnosis. But maybe instead of giving him the treats he used to get you might give him tiny bits of raw fish now and then. You know he'd love that, right?
I wonder, would a home made raw diet be possible? That could help him lose those extra pounds.
How are you doing Dianne? I know this is devastating news for you.

@DianneN I'm so sorry you are going through this and hopefully Doodles will fare better with the pampering he's sure to be getting more of now.
BTW, I love sardines and so do my kitties. I always buy those in water with no salt, maybe that would encourage Doodles to want to eat. Or even liver for that matter. Just think, you'd be feeding him healthy treats and he'd be lovin it.
All you need for you is a few clothes pin for the sensitive noses right?

@rebelann Hugs are so appreciated right now. Actually, I like sardines and liver, so no clothespins needed. I'll be sure to let Doodles have a taste, although he doesn't eat much human food.
Due to lack of loading up on treats and dry food during the day, he wolfed down most of his dinner, meds crushed and mixed in. We were so happy!

I'm miserable. We all are. The vet suggested grinding his pills and mixing them in his organic wet food. If he doesn't have treats, he will be hungry enough to eat his food. He did also say that it would be great to mix it with salmon and it's broth or even cream cheese, which Doodles also loves. He is a stinker taking liquid shots by mouth! Doodles is a very fussy eater and could go all day without eating. He needs those meds, so we will see what happens. My poor, sweet baby. My son is taking it just as badly as I am. Thanks for all your ideas and compassion!

@DianneN Pet lovers have to go through this rather unwelcome phase in their life. We have experienced it with so many of our pets - helplessly waiting

Poor Doodles. He is lucky to have loving owners who are willing to do everything they can for him. Many people would just put him down or let him suffer.
I had a cat who I had to put down at 5. He had undiagnosed heart disease (who expects it in a normally-behaving 5 year old) and he threw a clot that blocked blood flow to his hind legs so he was paralyzed. It was called a feline saddle thrombus. It was a nightmare.

@NJChicaa We once had to put a cat down due to cystitis. Nothing helped him. The vet called and suggested we put him down since S. Milton was there with the vet, so we gave our permission. Suddenly, we decided not to do it, but by the time we called back, it was over. Boy, did we cry. We got him before we were married. We are all nuts over Doodles. It is especially hard on our son and me.

This is critical, as it stands right now Doodle is an older cat, which makes these conditions a lot harder on him. I'm so glad you are doing everything possible, to make him well! Poor baby 'Happy Birthday, Sweet Boy!'

@kobesbuddy That's so true. The love they give is wonderful while it lasts. It's so sad that they have a relatively short life span compared to ours.

Oh how I wish there were a "do not like" button on here.
SO sorry that Doodle's issue had to be something of the more serious nature. There's nothing you can do to make him not have it, but at least there are some medicines that will help. At least they found it in time.
I'm so happy he has you. You take such good care of him I'm sure he appreciates.
Happy birthday Doodles!

Happy birthday kitty! I love him already.
I love your well written post ... are you a doctor in your spare time? I couldn't wrap my head around all those medical terms.
I hope dear Doodles respond to the medication and love you so obviously have for him.

Thank you! Thank you! It's funny how well I listened to the vet when he told us of Doodles' illness, but I never can fathom my doctor's discussions. I guess Doodles means more to me than I do to myself. Lol! I did want to be a heart surgeon, but my mother talked me out of it when I was about to go to college. Drat!
He's been very good taking his meds. He is upset that we lowered his treats so drastically.

@DianneN Oh, poor doggy. He must be think that the humans are punishing him by not giving him treats. What about treats like raisins and maybe fruits? Our dog eats that. LOl But I am sure if you tell him he'll understand. Dogs can understand up to 200 words. Intelligent they are!.
Heart surgeon? and your mom talk you out of it? That's crazy! Wish I had a kid who want to become a doctor. That's so ambitious for us.
