Extra medicines added to the 'free' list in Australia

We received a letter yesterday from our local Federal Member of Parliament. We have ‘Federal’ members (whole of Australia) and ‘State’ members. The letter advised that two new flu vaccines are now available to those over 65. These are free.
Further good news was that additional medicines which are used to treat diabetes, cancer, arthritis, asthma and eye disease have been added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. This scheme provides listed drugs at $39.50 per script with those on concessions (this includes pensioners) paying just $6.40 per script.
So that is good news. I don’t take any tablets but Vince has quite a smorgasbord now so any decrease in the cost of his tablets is welcome news. And if you read my previous post, the scarifier has been sold and is heading to its new home. It was very difficult to load on to the buyer’s trailer but we got there in the end.

That is great, Judy. When you mean free, you are allowed to claim it anytime or you still need prescriptions to get it?

@JudyEv I see. But I think that still helps. But the others that are not free, there is a discounted rate?

That is good to hear, the diseases you mentioned are expensive maladies, what I got last week was free anti-rabbies vaccine so I had my dogs vaccinated large savings than bringing them to the vet, from time to time they give out free multi -vitamins. My mother gets senior citizen discount on meds but never free

I hope that more people over there get free medication because they are definitely expensive.

Oh good - I think it is a crime what some medicine cost - some people have to choose medicine, or going without. Im happy it's getting lesser cost in some cases.

@JudyEv That is tragic. There should be some kind of rules about withholding life saving medicine because of cost.

Free meds are always good news. Many lifesaving meds here are offered for 4.00 per prescription, well I think it may be 5 now. Some pharmacies do offer them for free, which is fantastic.

That's good that the price is so low for some and as you say, fantastic if they're free.

I get reimbursed for all medical expenses through a scheme that my husband had joined while in service. It is such a blessing

@allknowing I can imagine that it would have. Vince had one night in an intensive care unit after a heart scare and it was $1,000 a night.

It's similar over here too. We get free flu jabs over the age of 65 and I know that we get free diabetes and cancer treatment; not sure about the others but I daresay it is the same.

Glad you got it sold. Wonderful news on the medicines, I hope it helps you save some money. The U.S. does not do anything to help people with costs.

Thanks. I think all of Vince's tablets are on the subsidised list. I know know how some people can afford to be ill.

That is great news. All flu shots are free here but medications are not unless your income is below a certain level or you have additional insurance.

We are lucky in that respect. Some people find it very hard to buy the medicines they need.

Someone from another country in Gab posted an article on suspicious "flu" vaccines from Australia being moved to other countries too. They were warning against it. If I come back across the post I'll paste it here.
