Spring and its side effects

It is a public holiday today in France. I went to do some shopping in one of the rare supermarkets opened. At the end of my street there were several CRS (Republican Company for Security, a kind of cops ensuring public order at demonstrations and riots, their best friend is their billy club) blocking the access to a square where the préfet was giving a speech. I thought that they would ask me to open my bag, but no, the one blocking the door of the public garden that I had to cross was calling his girlfriend and was sending hugs to her. I would not have thought that a CRS could also be a poet whispering sweet nothings to a girl. It is spring ! And a very warm spring. More than 30°C expected today, it did not happened on May 8th since 1976. In the street at the bottom of the public garden I saw something that I had also never seen, a little sister of poor people wearing a white bucket hat over her veil. It could have been my best photo of the year, but I did not dared to do it. Respect for religion ? Shyness ? I cannot tell. Well, it is a warm spring ! When I was queuing at the cashdesk, I heard behind me «It is a 1 liter bottle ?» I had a quick look. The bottle was a bottle of «Wine from Aude». It makes a very good white vinegar to use as a softener in a washing machine. And it also fixes colors. The guy asking it was a bit worried, and I can understand that, nobody has ever seen a good wine sold in a 1 liter bottle. «Yes, but you will taste it another day, it needs to be served very fresh» said the other guy. The French cousin of Billy Jo Jim Bob was wearing a Tshirt of the Paris-Saint-Germain soccer club. The other one -- maybe his brother-in-law ? -- seemed reassured. And Billy Jo, who was buying several packs of merguez (a mutton spiced sausage from North-Africa), said that he had to prune a cherry tree for the BBQ. Poor cherry tree ! I am a nut. Just heard at the radio that the French finals of soccer was tonight. Paris Saint-Germain vs Les Herbiers, a small club in Vendée. Billy Jo Jim Bob was wearing a fashionable T-shirt. I heard a guy with a Northern Parisian accent saying how wonderful it was, maybe some players from Les Herbiers had never visited Paris ? Ja, ja, ja, if he had ever seen the Atlantic Ocean on the Vendée shores a day of storm he would not make a superiority complex. I definitely support David against Goliath. The sun shines on my windows. It is spring. I am going to do a bicyle ride, no offence but do not expect a comment soon, it is spring.

Enjoy your bike ride out while you can and don´t overdo it either. Glad you did not take that photo you have mentioned. I have taken photos not brilliant of where I have moved to they will suffice.

@lovinangelsinstead21 I would not make a good professional photographer, I refrain myself to take pictures of people in the streets.

I did a few km on a path near the river. Without gnats it would have been perfect. Something stopped me to take this photo, but I regret it, I will perhaps never see again a nun wearing a bucket hat.

wow, I could smell the hot warm air of spring from just reading your post. I didn't notice that we are almost in June here (oh well, almost mid May right now, right?). Hate it when at our age, time just flies by so fast. I no longer know if I like spring or winter or whatever it is anymore. My kids become more mature with time(which I want to see), and my hair got greyer, my health weaker (which I am not sure I like that to happen) .

You are not an exception, my beard turned grey several years ago, but my hair are resisting. Today was a warm day of summer two months ahead of schedule. Maybe a compensation for all the rain we got until last month.

@YrNemo Lol, it depends of the color ; with chestnut hair I prefer a grey beard to a red beard.

@topffer I am thinking, should I wish for my beard to be grey so that my hair could remain steadfast in its original color?

Rain seems behind us in France, it was as warm as in July today. I am careful, I did a ride on a path near a river, the ground is flat and it is forbidden to cars. But they should also forbid it to gnats.

I forgot that the 8th of May is a Holiday (Fête de la Victoire?), I suppose that also the 10th is a holiday (Ascension day) and the 21st (Pentecost Monday). I remember that May was a terrible month of holiday, we used to be away on May. During the day is very warm here too (27 Celsius), but we have thunderstorms every night.

Things are slowing down in May, we have 4 days of public holidays in May, many people are in vacations. It will be in 2 weeks for me. It has not rained here since a week and it is a welcome change. With all the rain we had until last month, 2018 is a bad year for farmers, many crops are already busted. Be prepared to pay more for your bread before the end of the year.

@topffer We have rain every day, the price of the wheat should not increase. I make my bread, just in case, I will buy more flour and keep it in the basement. We also have 4 public holidays in May, the 2 I mentioned, May 1st and May 30 (Corpus Domini), that one is still a holiday also in Monte-Carlo.

@LadyDuck May 8th was added only in the 1980's in France and Whit Monday removed during a few years but it is back as a public holiday although it will be the "solidarity day" for me : we have to work 1 day/year for aged and disabled people without being paid.

What a lovely rambling post but then, as you say, it is spring. Enjoy your bike ride in the sunshine.

Thank you. I went on a path near a river, but there were many gnats around and they were targeting my eyes. Next time I will take sun glasses.

@topffer It's warm and sunny here at the moment and the paper wasps are hovering under the verandah. I'm not quite brave enough to go out and spray them but if they start building anywhere I'll spray them when it gets dark.

@JudyEv I would do like you, I do not like wasps, and we have impressive Asian wasps since a few years, they forced me to keep my windows closed last summer. I have had a nest of hornets in a chimney several years ago, I did a good fire with a lot of smoke and they decided that it was not a place for them.

"French cousin of Billy Jo Jim Bob" . Lots of amusing spring time observations - it's very much like my thought process . It is quite warm here in the mid 80's F . . . this is the "spring" we are used to but it comes rather late for us (usually it is this way much earlier in the year - I should not complain ). Spring here means teachers are trying to wrap things up as the school year ends - and it has not been an easy feat for us volunteers (that's why I haven't been here much this week, on top of other things) . . . so now I can't wait til summer . Well I hope you had a nice bike ride . . . is this going to be daily now that spring is behaving?

30 degree C? I am sure it's not comfortable riding a bicycle in such a temperature. I think the best time for biking is when it is 18-25. by the way we are experiencing 45 for time being so planning to run away to somewhere having a pleasant weather.
