Yikes- What to Do If A Dog Bites?

Question for today- Do you know anyone whose dog has ever bitten someone? What happened? What did the owners do? In my case it was our family dog Sam. It happened a couple times with my Mom and myself. Sam was always a little aggressive but cooperative. Both of us got bit on the finger. We were putting food in his bowl when it happened so it was somewhat our fault. Later on, when Sam was older, going deaf, and starting to have health issues, my older brother who is a vet, took over the responsibility for the dog. Eventually, Sam became very aggressive towards people, and when he bit my brother he decided it was time to put him down. A very sad day for the family Photo- dogster.com

I am very sorry, my cousin had a very aggressive dog, a big one, a Maremma Sheepdog. She tried to bite my Mom and also the father of my cousin.

I have read the males can be aggressive. Also loud barkers!

That is sad but honestly, a dog that bites can be quite dangerous. There have been some horrendous attacks on children by savage dogs. I know Sam wasn't in that category but even nips hurt.

I always wonder why some dogs are violent like that. I guess one reason could be mistreatment by their owner. Another possibly the breed?

@dgobucks226 I think some breeds are prone to viciousness but of course there are always those who say it's the fault of the owners if the dogs turn vicious.

@JudyEv That is very true. I've read about owners who raise their pit bulls to be violent dogs.

I was bit bad in the knee when I was living on Guam when I visited a neighbor. The dog had just had puppies, and was the first to answer the door when the owner opened it. I had to go to the hospital for treatment, and the dog, unfortunately had to be quarantined, but at least she wasn't put down. I had a very protective dog, who nipped, but fortunately he didn't need to be put down. Though I did need to take him to the vet to prove he wasn't rabid.

@dgobucks226 More a barker, but really protective. He was a border collie and I found out they are natural nippers. The are sheep herding dogs and they're bred to nip at the heals of sheep to keep them in line, going in the direction they need to go and keep them from harm. So, it was a natural tendency for him to nip, but he was never aggressive.

I guess they had to see if the dog who bit you was suffering from rabies? Yes, some dogs can be protective in that way. Was your dog a growler or barker?

I had a girlfriend whose German Shepard bit her child in the face. After a couple of other people nearly got bit she got rid of the dog. Did they do anything to the dog for attacking you?

@dgobucks226 There was no other choice. Sam just got worse the older he got. It is very sad loss for you but your brother took it out of your hands and put it in his to make the decision. It was the right one. My ex once got bit by a dog when he was a mailman. It was horrible cleaning him up. He was not a good patient.

Yes, Hanni a tough decision for sure. We could not have Sam in that condition anymore. And my brother has neighbors with kids, so it had to be done.

I am terrified of dogs. I cannot even walk my own neighborhood. To top things off, dogs sense my fear.

Yes, you are right! They do sense fear Leiann. And so many people own dogs where can one walk and be undisturbed?

@dgobucks226 I agree. I cannot even walk my neighborhood without being scared. People tell me there is nothing to worry about. Those are the people who are wrong.
