Jury Duty Cancelled

Some of you might recall I was called up for jury duty last month, then it was postponed till this month. Well, I was supposed to report tomorrow, but received the text this afternoon to say that it has been cancelled. Feeling a mix of disappointment (I thought it would be interesting) and relief (I'm at a very busy time right now, and can do without the extra days out.) Ah well, I guess there will be other times.

So far I have been lucky and have never been assigned. Now that I said that it will probably happen. But I DO agree it might be interesting.

@lynnief Too bad. Like I said, in one sense I don't want to do it. But then again...there are some pretty interesting cases...it might be fun. My only opportunity to be a fly on the wall perhaps. lol

This is the second time I've been called up. A few years ago I actually had to go in for the day, went through all the routine, and thought I would be on a big case, but then they decided that the guy was too well known locally and wouldn't get a fair trial, so it was moved to Melbourne (capital of our state, about 150 kms from here) and so I didn't get to do it.

Typical of the government jerking people's lives.

The hardest part is that the initial letter gives a 3 month time period when you could be called, which really means that you can't make any plans for those 3 months. I suppose it's the only way they can work it, but it's a bit frustrating.

@lynnief A fashion in which government exerts control over your life. They can change dates on a moment's notice but you aren't allowed to.

@JohnRoberts Here we do have some leeway to change. Last time I was called up it was at a time when I had a holiday booked, and I had no problems deferring the jury duty for a few months.

They didn't give you much notice did they? Do you feel as though you've been granted an extra day? That's how we felt when the car broke down on us.

No, it's quite normal that they let you know the night before. Actually I now have 3 whole days with nothing to do outside of home. Normally I would be working on Thursday, but I went to work today because I thought I'd be doing jury duty tomorrow; and normally I would be going to the market with my books on Saturday, but the weather girl is predicting bucketing rain so unless there is a dramatic change the market isn't going to happen this week (books and rain don't mix very well - even though my stall is inside, I would still have to get them from the car to the hall and back.) I can't remember the last time I had 3 days in a row without having to go out. :-)

@lynnief You won't know yourself. We won't get to Melbourne for a few weeks yet but I know they are forecasting very cold weather.

@JudyEv Yes, after a drawn out "Indian summer" it seems like winter has finally decided that it's time to arrive with a bang.
